Not much information from me on the 20 VT yet, but fireforming I was getting as much as 3,550 - 3,650 fps. Dropping back to a more realistic 3,520 for overall use. By measurement I should be able to get another 5% more powder in over the 3,650 fps once fireformed. That in theory would give me 3,823 fps. Todd lists the 20 VT at a potentisl 3,800 fps. Neat cartridge. Using a Sako Vixen action, VV chambered and put it in a beautiful piece of wood. Now what if we give the 20 VT a 40 degree shoulder and less neck?

That's matching the speed of .223 Rem out of a 24" barrel, with less case capacity.

here are some other results from my 221 fb 40 degree loads were tested on a oheler and a pact pro chronograph. 21 gr w680 36 gr starke 3861, 23.3 gr aa 1680 40 nosler balistic tip 3681, same load with 40 blitz king 3635. 20.7 rl 7 50balistic tip 3134,21.0 re 7 50 gr blitz king 3288 fps,20.0 gr rl 7 52 speer 3126 fps. 21 gr 2200 55 balistic tip 3030 fps 21 gr 2200 60 horn. 2944 fps. i don't suggest any one try these loads in a regular 221 fb as they may be to hot . my question is how much velocity would a 20" or 21" barrel give me? i may have to do another rifle project. so many projects and so little time and money. i want to build a ruger 77 hornet into a 17 30 carbine. if i can find a smith to redo the rotary magazine to feed the larger diamiter cartridge..foxhunter

Howell's book shows the .221 with a 23 degree shoulder and a neck length of .202". Todd's manual shows the .20 VT with a 30 degree shoulder and a neck length of .224". Does anyone have the software to see what the 20 VT would do with a 40 degree shoulder, a neck length of .160" and a shoulder diamater of .370? I know this falls under the heading of "Why", but I had to ask the question. I know going to a Tactical 20 or even a 20 Turbo would give me lots more velocity, but that little FB case just kind of draws you to it.

Foxhunter, here's a pic of the 20 VT next to the parent Fireball case. As you can see, the 30 degree angle is formed by pushing back the shoulder slightly, lengthening the neck. Those velocities you are getting are downright amazing especially with such a short tube. My 23.5" standard Fireball runs 40's out at 3500, and 50's at 3200 with top loads of 2200 powder. My 24" VarTarg would do 3800 with the 33 grain Hornady with top loads......... Dan C

PRETTY NEAT CARTRIDGE, MY 221 FB HAS A 40 DEGREE SHOLDER BUT I FEEL I'M HAMPERED BY ONLY HAVING A 16 1/8 IN BARREL. THIS IS MY FOURTH 221 FB ,THE OTHERS WE A KIMBER SUPER AMERICAN ,REMINGTON MODEL 7 AND A REM 700 SA WITH A 20 IN BARREL. ALL THE GUNS WOULD REACH THE 3600 FPS MARK WITH 40 GR BULLITS. ODDLEY ENOUGT THE FASTEST WAS THE MODEL 7 AT 3650 FPS. THAT GUN WAS SHOT SO MUCH THE THROAT WAS GONE FOR AN IN AND A HALF . FOXHUNTER
