I seem to recall a post or two indicating the use of the above powders in a .17 Remington but can't recall. I have reached the max. with N135 without filling the case and wondered if these slower powders would give me a higher load density while still maintaining or increasing the max. velocity. I am shooting the Berger 30 grain bullets at around 3800 fps in a reformed case that has less powder capacity than the .17 Remington brass. If no one has direct experience, is there any reason why I shouldn't give them a try if I start low and work up slowly? Thanks. |

My best groups with N140 and 30 grain Berger MEF Molys were with 21.2 grains and a Federal 205M primer. Bullets were seated .020" off the lands, in a Remington 700 Classic with a 1 in 10" twist (I think this gun likes the lighter bullets better). I didn't Chrono the loads, but I estimate muzzle velocity to be around 3300 fps. The hotter I went, the larger the spread got. This load groups 5 shots at about 3/4" at 100 yards.
Regards, George. |

Doug, N-540 is a very nice powder in the 17 Rem. I actually used up to 25.0 grains with the Berger 30 for 3930 fps, but it was a little rough on the brass. This was in a factory Remington. A good working load of around 3850 worked very well in the 24" bbl. Dan C |

I expect the powder to arrive this week and I will give it a try provided the weather allows it. I love playing around with my .17 Remington. My search for the "perfect" load for this gun will only end when the barrel is shot out. At that point, I will have it rebarreled, bedded, trued etc and really see what it can do. |
