Unless you intend to shoot the 25 grain bullets still. THen maybe the Ackley Bee or Hebee would be a better choice with it's slightly increased case size. The hornet is a neat little round and will drive the 20 grain bullets at amazing speeds with such little powder (12 grains). Check the archives, this cartridge is a winner.

Out of the 10 inch hornet barrel that I have(had), it would shoot the 20 grain bullets at 3160 fps.

on cost for set up. are dies expensive and are they readily avaliable? is there much in the way of forming the cases? this will be my first wildcat so to say and don't want to get myself in to deep nor spend an arm and a leg for it. i have $500 to spend on barrel and dies, etc. for my encore. will this project be out of my range?

thanks
andy

FL dies are around 75 I think from Midsouth
Encore barrel is going to hit you around 320 or so
Cheapest base and rings are weaver and going about 30-35
then you still need scope and cleaning rod, jags, brushes and funnel plus bullets

Not trying to talk you out of it but you asked how much

now for brass that is formed you can buy for 30$ 100 shipped from me or spend I think 100+ for forming dies

JD is spot on on this. I had him form my cases for my Hornet and they were great. His price includes the cost of the brass, and is too cheap for me to waste my time forming them. If you want to form your own brass, you can also get a double end forming die from Bullberry for 35 bucks and form your own. The hornet is easy to form and a great round for first time wildcatters. My first wildcat was the Hebee and was similar in complexity. Your budget should get you in the game.

I say go for it even if you need to scavenge a scope off of another rifle or buy a cheap scope to start.
