I am REALLY thinking of taking the plung and getting a 17 caliber barrel made for my Encore. I am thinking of a semi-long range handgun barrel. Length I am thinking about is between 16 to 18", I will probably go longer so I can also use the barrel as a carbine. What I would like imput on is barrel length, choosing between a 17 Ackley Bee and a 17 Mach IV, and shooting mid weight bullets. Thanks.

I have a Contender pistol chamberd in 17 Mach IV by Bullberry that is 17 inches long. I have to say this combination is SWEET. I am able to drive 20 gr V-maxs just under 4000 fps with 17 grains of H4198 and group three shots at .75 inches.

The accuracy is fantastic as well, my 20 gr V-max load going 3600 fps gave me three 3-shot groups that averaged .36 inches at 100 yds. These groups were shot with a 7x pistol scope so I am sure I induced some of that error.

At longer ranges I have been impressed as well. I have several groups at 200 yds that are under 1" and a couple 300 yd groups that were just over 3". Again these were fired using thr 7x scope so I KNOW I was a major part of the problem. At 300 yds the reticle covered almost all of my aiming point.

FYI I have also found a great low velocity load using 5 gr of Blue Dot that will group five 25 gr Hornady HPs at .8 inches at 2050 fps.

I am currently planning to put a stock on the Contender and a 32x target scope to see how accurate the thing really is. Either way the Mach IV is good to go in the pistol length barrel.

Please ask away if you want any more info.
