I have been reading and watching the posts here. I am wondering what is going to be the best powder to use in my 17AH. It has a 24" Shilen tube and I am going to use only 20 VMAX's. I would like to use an extreme powder so I would not have to worry about temp. messing with the load. What about H4227 can I get enough powder in the case to reach a max load? Or should I break away from the extreme stuff and use Lil-Gun powder. I am a die hard user of Hodgdon powders, any suggestions? Would like velocity as long as it shoots well.
Thanks, Your friend, Chucker.

Don't know the Best powder, but I use AA-1680 with good results.

I was using V V N-133, but it was too slow for the 20 gr V-Max bullets, moly coated. I switched over to AA-1680 and at about 12 gr, I get 3700 fps out of a 22" Contender barrel from Bullberry. There are no excessive pressure signs. I also use the Rem 7-1/2 primers because of the stronger primer cups. Good Hunting from... Varmint Al http://www.varmintal.com/ahunt.htm

One of the only suitable powders I haven't tried in the 17 AH is H4227.......but I do believe it will get you where you want to go. Once I stumbed upon N-120 it quickly became my favorite for 20 gr. bullets. It seems to be pretty consistent in varying temps too, and meters well enough to charge cases right from the measure. Kernel wise, it is exactly the same size as H4227. Very clean stuff. But as I stated, H4227 may be every bit as good.........There, how's that for typing a bunch of words without actually helping you!!! For what it's worth, I didn't like Lil'Gun in the 17 AH. It's very fast in this case and fill ratio is only about 60% or so. Another powder that works well is el cheapo Accurate 2200. That stuff IS temp sensitive, but for summertime PD shooting offers some good economy at $47 for 8 lbs., or about 4000 shots!!

Hey Alan, I like H4198 with 25 grain bullets, but loading a bunch of them is a drag as it doesn't meter very good!

I don't have a 17 AH but I have heard that WW680 is supposed to be a good powder for it. Similar to AA1680 and the old Win680. It is available from most of the surplus powder distributers for around $5 per lb.

I have used IMR4227 and it worked good. Velocity was good and accuracy was good. I was using it while fireforming so I am not sure how full you could get the case, but I was able to get 3200 fps out of a 10" contender barrel while fireforming with 20 grain bullets. Accuracy of the fireforming load was great. I lost one case out of 50 to a split neck with the 3200 fps load.

.. as I get about 3800 fps using 12.5 gr both to fireform and afterwards. So far I haven't lost a case! I'm sure that will change. I also use WSR primers. You need to know about pressure signs long before you would even notice anything unusual happenning to Rem 7.5 primers, and there isn't enough powder to warrant the extra fire.

My take on the VMax bullets has not been good. Maybe I got two bad lots, or maybe I'm not seating them deep enough into the lands. The shoot patterns in my Cooper M38 old style Classic (20 inch barrel).

Starke 20's are both accurate and have a good terminal result (200 yard, 20 oz Pepsi bottle splits in two). Berger 20 HP's are also accurate, but terminal effect is a small exit hole in the bottle. Virginia groundhogs don't survive the Starke's, run off with the Bergers if the placement isn't just right. I have not tried Berger MEF 20's, which I have seen praised as the most accurate 20 gr pill on GGVG.

I haven't tried N120. Thanks Dan C. Will get some. My experience with the VV powders (133 and 135)is that they are quite clean.

Our local shop (Greentop in Ashland, VA) has stopped carrying the AA line of powders. Bought a bunch they had on sale as they dropped it in favor of the RamShot stuff.
