howdy, please bear with me as i learn the .17 world. I shoot prairie dogs almost exclusively. I like to see Red Mist and have designed two of my .223R's on Savage actions to be super heavy with Choate sniper stocks and 4-14x40 Springfield Armory scopes. They weigh in around 15#, so I can usually see the bullet strike and the resulting ''mist''. I have found the best 224 ''mist'' bullet to be the Sierra Blitz-King Will the .17 Remington ''mist'' prairie dogs?? Which is the most explosive bullet for ''misting''?? TIA Happy trails, Barry |

I have never shot prairie dogs and shoot mostly eastern groundhogs which are larger. My comments may not apply to prairie dogs but most of my .17 kills (and the reason the caliber is so much liked by fur hunters) is that you get a very small hole going in and nothing coming out; the total energy of the bullet is expended inside the animal. You have to look very closely to see why this varmint is now "sleeping". The kill is instantaneous and externally nondestructive. I use Berger 25 and 30 grain bullets. Maybe others can comment on an explosive .17 bullet.

if you are looking for red mist the 17 is not the way to go.
i have killed thousands of prarie dogs with a 17 rem and 17-223 they kill with hydrastatic shock not bullit explosion. yes you can dismember a prarie dog with a 17 but not the type of helicopter stuff a 243 with a 60 hp. bob |

Berger 22mefs as far as explosive kills out of my Mach1V.I have since switched to 25 Starkes as they have a nice hollow point also, and they are very accurate. My trials with the Mach1V are always ongoing and I have really enjoyed the 27grn .090bt Kindler bullet also while its hollow point is quite small its bc is great,I seem to be trending towards the better bc bullets
at this point, but the big hp's are fun too.I can't wait to get out this spring and try the 17ppc 10-twist with some light bullets(20 v-max) and see what they do to pd's. Regards Matt |
