In my last post, I was looking for load data for this rifle, still am. Most advise is to rebarrel or rechamber it for a more standard caliber, but if I can I'd like to shoot it first- I realize that I may then be stuck with .17-223 in a new bbl, but we'll see.
Does anybody have 5-10 pieces of .17-223 brass they are willing to sell or trade? I need to fireform them for measurements to get dies made.

I am going to row against the current, and tell you to leave the 17/223 just as is. My reasoning is this, and I am in this same current situation with a rifle I have on layaway. Only one maker produces brass for the 17 Rem, which is the only factory 17. They sell for about 120 dollars/500. Everybody sells 223 brass, depending on what you want, for much less than that. And forming 17/223 is a relatively simple task.

Read the post below, I tried to form 17 Rem cases from 223, and the results were a shorter case. The below responder stated that this would be OK, but I am just a little worried still about flame cutting a ring in the chamber over extended use and ruining the barrel.

So in hindsight, I think the 17/223 is more cost-effective then the Rem version.

I would not worry to much about a ring being cut in the chamber, the only thing that should happen is you will not have to trim for awhile, with the 38/357 round being stright they cut the ring cuz they strengh so little were bottle neck case strengh allot and they will not be firing in the same spot every time so you should be fine, by the time you have problems in the chamder for shooting 17/223 in a 17 Rem, your bore will be smooth

Nothing I said is proven, but just what I think from my years of reading and shooting and reloading

Speaking only from what I've read here so far, it seems that you will be able to use regular 17-Rem dies. This would be much less expensive than custom dies. Do a chamber cast just to see how deep the neck was cut and what your freebore actualy is. Base your decision upon that. If you still choose to go the custom route, send the chamber cast to the die maker. Most are willing to work from those as well as fired cases.

In your particular case a 17-Rem Improved set of dies might still be more available than custom. I forgot this little detail in my first posting.

Try checking with CH4D. They make good dies and have more of teh odd wildcats than you can shake a stick at. Many of the custom sets are only $60-80! Quite a deal.

Tim

PS www.CH4D.com I think.

I have a set of JGS 17-223 Ackley Improved reamers. One sizing die reamer, one chambering reamer. I would rent them out and you could rechamber your rifle and have a set of dies made, by your gunsmith.
