just mailed out according to editor. It should have some information on the .17HMR, I would think. I get a bunch of magazines, but always look forward to SCN and Precision Shooting the most. The others seem to get read partially when I find the time. I usually don't get anything done around the house when PS or SCN arrives as I have to read them immediately. I have been known to sit in the car in the driveway scanning the pages after getting the mail. What magazines do you get that you can't wait to read and look forward to more than anything else.

LOTS of articles from serious hunters and shooters. Most magazines are only good for a couple of hours of reading, but the VHA is pretty thick, with high quality photos etc.

I should add VHA to my list as well. I like it plenty. It is thick and I do enjoy the quality photos and articles.

Jim, see the article on "Action Truing the Gre-Tan Way" in the new PS mag? That's my man I mentioned to you. Only difference is, when Greg does the work, he does not indicate the action in to within .0005". He dials it in to less than .0001" runout at both indicators! This is the only way to get an action absolutely true. The short and dirty methods just cost you money for no return..........If you decide to get the action 'trued' on that Javelina, let Greg do it, or someone who uses his tooling. Dan C

I just got my PS magazine last night and only started to read the article. I will probably finish it tonight, had too much going on last night. I did scan through the pages and saw our own Corbin Shell with his incredible story. I bet that it gets some attention.

Dan , Stan Ware @ SGR Custom Rifles builds all my guns, both for BR and predator hunting. Stan uses this type of tooling, but instead of fitting the bolt with front and rear split sleeves, Stan removes the bolt handle and then fits the bolt body with a one piece sleeve. The bolt handle is then reinstalled and pinned. This is a better way to go, even if it takes more work. The bolt will not 'drag' on the leading and trailing edges of the split sleeves as it's cycled. I've had four Remington's done by SGR in this manner, and every one of those guns shoot like a dream. If the gun is to be used with the magazine, this reduced bolt-to-reciever clearance may not be what you want to ensure easy feeding. I know that Stan gives the Palma guns he's built this way a bit more clearance to allow for easier bolt manipulation. My latest project at SGR is a light weight calling rifle for coyotes. I haven't checked the bolt-to-reciever clearance yet on the action I'm going to use, but if it's excessive and we sleeve it, I think I'm going to have Stan set the clearance at around .004-.005 for easy feeding from the magazine. Good shootin'. -Al.

Al, that single sleeve DOES sound interesting. I've heard you mention it before. With the front/rear sleeves, Greg generally set them up with only about .0002" clearance, then he makes relief cuts in the sleeves so that when the bolt handle is lifted the sleeves 'unlock'. Like 'Borden bumps'. This also eliminates the drag, or catching on the edge of the sleeve during cycling you mentioned. I don't think most of the smiths using the double sleeves take the time to do this. I wonder if doing this with the single sleeve would let you run the tighter clearances for accuracy, and get the easy cycling too. I tend to push Greg because he is a super guy and a coyote hunting buddy as well. He is also in easy driving distance from me which is handy! I certainly don't mean to imply that he is the only smith that does good work. I've checked out Stan's site too and would not hesitate for one second to send some work his way. I've seen you mention his work many times and that is recommendation enough..........I know I tend to sound pretty opinionated at times, just ONE of my many faults! Regards,

Dan, doing a single sleeve like you describe does work! Both my 6BR and my Javelina have this done to them. It sounds like you and Mr. Tannel have the same sort of working relationship that Stan and I do...it's a real blessing for a shooter to be able to work so closely with quality 'smiths like these guys. We are constantly working with different ideas. Stan has taken up Hunter BR shooting, and we travel to matches together. He also has a booth at the VHA Jamboree in Pierre, S.D. every year that my brother Todd and I go to and help him with.
Hopefully you and I can meet in person some day...sonds like we have a lot of the same interests (and opinions!!). LOL! Take care. -Al.

I am fortunate to call Greg a friend. In fact I had dinner with him tonight, and he mentioned that Stan called him the other night. He speaks highly of Mr. Ware. Matt Smith keeps trying to get me to go to the Jamboree, maybe next year? I'll look you up if I make it! Be a pleasure to meet ya', along with Todd and Stan, and many other folks I'd like to shake hands with........ Dan C
