Personally I don't like any of my rifles to shoot high @ 100 yds, I sight in dead on at 100 and either adjust turrets or hold over for extended ranges. This is just easier for me to shoot more precisely. I think the 1.5" @ 100ydw was a throw back from an old time big game hunter(trivia for ya?)who used this method to keep his 270 cal bullet in the vital area of a deer sized target from point blank out to 300+yds.
This is good for someone that dosn't shoot enough to know with certainty where his bullet is going at x yds, takes all the guess work out of it but not sure how useful it would be to hit lil critters. I also know many good hunters that swear by that method, so I say whatever works best for you.
good luck

Drifter,
Thanks for the info...
As for the 1.5 thing that was the measurement from the center of the bore to the center of the scope. I was only thinking of going 1/2 inch high at 100 yrds. I just got back from the range and I sighted it dead on at 100. So I will go from there, I didn't want to tweak with my scope turrets because it is a "cheaper" make so I'm not too confident on it repeatablity....

at 100 is how I have mine set and I've never had a regret. I kinda wonder why you are shooting the 20 grain v-maxes at 4,000 fps when you can shoot the 25's at the same velocity. If it shoots well with the combo - that is fine but I think that you are short changing yourself with this combination. I shoot the 20 grain v-maxes at 3900+ fps out of the Hebee with it's 20" barrel. The v-maxes do have a very high Ballistic Coefficient and should perform well out to the long ranges - giving up very little to the 25's as far as drop and wind drift goes.

Jim,
I am using the 20gr. because someone gave me a bunch when I got my gun! :-P
As for the velocity, I am slowly working my way up on speed, I got some great input from you guys on loads and Hornaday is sending me their load data as well. I was told that I could treat the 20gr the same as the 25 since they have the same length.
In your humble opinion what range should I be going for with these bullets? Also which ones have better terminal effects on small targets (Ground Squirrels)? My VSS is really starting to come along and I am starting to shoot some very very small groups. hmm... think I'll start another post!

I haven't used any v-maxes on any small critters. I get good accuracy with them in my Hebee, but haven't killed any tiny critters to test their terminal performance. As long as it is shooting good for you, use them. Keep us posted on the terminal effects when you get to try them, and by all means post some of your groups.
