I don't own a 17PPC but a 17BR instead , right now I shoot 30gr Hammetts but just about to run out ! ordered some of Tod Kindler's 29gr BT today though, I just hope they perform as well as the Hammetts on coyotes. Thanks! Mark

Hello Mark D.,
I interested in your experiences with the .17BR cartridge. How does it shoot? Do you think it's a little overbore for .17cal? Any excessive fouling down the barrel? Thanks for your time, Larry

Larry I built the 17BR to shoot the heavier 27gr and up to 30gr bullets, it has been very deadly on coyotes. as far as the fouling it is not bad at all . I have cleaning it about every 10 rounds and it cleans very easy so far.The barrel is a PAC NOR 1&9 twist. 700 Rem action with a composite stock. I have two 17BR rifles , the first one i built on a Farley Firefly action , it is just a single shot that is why I built the 700. As far as overbore , I don't think so it will do everything that I expected , push a 30gr well past 4000fps and not overstress the brass. the accuracy is great to.Right now I am trying to get someone to build a 32 to 34 grain bullet . Thanks! Mark

I shoot a 29 gr Kinder with N540, out of a 17 PPC. It's a great combination. I have some 27 gr BTs on the shelf I'm going to try when it warms up. If memory servers I can get them (the 29s) up in the 4200 range with excellent accuracy.... I would also like to see a .17 caliber bullet in the 32-35gr range for the larger cases. Has anyone tried to build something that would shoot the 37gr VLD at subsonic levels? May be a very fast twist barrel and the CCM or squirrel case............??? I bet it would be very quite! This spring I'm going to try and load the CCM down to 1050fps with the 20gr v-maxs. It's going to be my "garden/basement" load! jh

I called Champion Shooter's and tried to order 10 boxes of the 17 HMR and the people I talked to didn't know about the ammo. I got the guy's email, perry@championshooters.com and sent him the info from AcuSports. The 17 HMR is listed on AcuSports' web site. Still no reply. Looks like it is going to be very difficult to fine the ammo. Good Hunting from Varmint Al Good Hunting from... Varmint Al

Thanks for the Info JD and the email. I have a case on order. The price is right too! I contacted Elizabeth at MidSouth and she KNEW about the 17 HMR, unlike the other distributers that I talked to. Below is a link to the MidSouth page. Good 17's.... Varmint Al Good Hunting from... Varmint Al

Drifter/redfeather: I'm interested in the blue dot loads you guys have come up with. Any ideas on pressures with these loads in the rem or M4? I don't imagine that they're terribly high.... I remember seeing some blue dot .222 and .223 loads but I'll be damned if I can find them in any of my loading manuals. I used to use a reduced load of 700X in my .22-250 for fox with 45 gr. Sierra spitzer. Worked great but tended to exit (small). I found that load in an article by Rick Jamison. I'm very interested in trying the reduced blue dot load with 20 gr. V-max on fox in my .17 rem. Rick. PS Great pictures of the foxes.

I even load 10.6g bluedot, and 11.6g bluedot but the 11.6 is maximum load so work up to it carefully. The 10g loads a real good for leaving no pelt damage. Thanks.

Thanks Redfeather. I'll have to load some up and try them on fox. I'll likely just stick with 10.0 gr with the v-max and see how they shoot. Blue Dot should be fast burning enough for no concerns over 'detonation' is my thinking or is my logic all wrong.... I've also thought of using a 10% reduced load (from recommended max) of Varget with the .17 v-max to cut the velocity a bit for use on fox. I imagine the muzzle report would be considerably greater than with the blue dot. I'll likely try both and see which works better for my rifle. Rick

I am definately loving the bd loads. Redfeather chronoed some today, the 10 gr load is shooting right around 3000fps. I will hopefully get out to the range and figure trajectories on them out to about 250 or 300 yds, will have to see if its calling weather or range weather this weekend. There is a bunch of reduced load data on Jim Calhoons web site , for 223 and some other calibers.

Shooting the 20g Vmax using 10g BD I got 3,300fps, and shooting the 25g RPVB HP and using 10g BD I got 3,075fps. It was around 60 degrees during the testing. I was able to shoot groups of around 1/2" to 5/8" with these loads out of my 17M4, but this load should shoot the same from a regular 17 remington, too. Thanks-redfeather.

I have a couple of questions. First off, have any of you had good accuracy results using the 20gr VMAX in a standard weight .17 Remington BDL? Second question, my loading manual doesn't list anything but loads for 25gr bullets in .17 caliber, where should I start when loading 20gr bullets? I've been using 21gr of H335, Hornady 25gr H.P., Remington brass, and Winchester primers with pretty good results. I've shot the 50gr VMAX's in my .22-250 and they do wonders on jackrabbits, I just picked up my .17 and I want to try the 20gr VMAX's for rabbits. I think I'll stick with the 25gr Hornady H.P. for coyotes. Thanks for any info.

My rem 700 classic did great with them , using 24 gr of imr 4320, that is the same load I used for 25 gr bullets as well. if you like the explosive v-max bullets , I would give the 25 gr starke rpvb's a try, super accurate and great performance.
see ya

I've had fair results with 23 grains of Varget behind the 20-grain V-Max. I use Federal 205M primers.
My best 20-grain load is 21.2 grains of VihtaVuori N-133 behind a Starke 20-grain HP-FB varmint bullet.
Regards, George.

I will have to go and look for the load as it is buried deep somewhere in the moving boxes. Depending on barrel length you should be able to get 4300-4500fps with the 20gr bullet in the standard .17rem. When I did my testing with this bullet I shot some good 5 shot groups at 300 yards at 4500fps. The best 5 shot group could be covered by a quarter. I was able to get to 4700fps before there was a thermal meltdown. At these high velocities the trajectory is FLAT to all practical ranges 0-300 yards. Corbin

Buster I have tried the 20 grain vmax and have found them to be
extremely accurate. I also was able to down a couple of
songdogs and a javalina while down in AZ last year.
After hunting with the 20 grain this year, i am finding
them a little light for coyotes. Had a couple walk off
and die. I am trying to get the 28 grain calhoon to
group, but so far no luck. Have fun with the 17
