If anyone has any has any info I would greatly appreciate it. I can get a great deal on a CZ in a hornet, but I am thinking the only options are hornet based calibers , wich is fine I want an AH. But if a 17 M4 is possible on this action that would be my choice. Thanks again guys. |

Hey Drifter. It would be a pretty simple operation to make that CZ Hornet into a Mach IV. Any decent gunsmith could open up the boltface and rework the extractor. A CZ 222 magazine fits the Hornet bottom metal (the 223 mag is different) I have a 527 right now in 17 Ackley Hornet and have been having feeding problems. If I can't get it resolved, I may just do the Mach IV thing too. Dan C |

I would rather go with a 17 m4 BIG TIME. Do you know a good gunsmith that you would reccomend? I was thinking just to go with the 17 AH, figuring it would be an easy conversion , and less costly. But the more I think about it the more I am leaning towards the M4. I can get the cz for $450 new and a browning micro hunter for $570 , decisions decisions. I need to make up my mind here, fox season will be the only game in town in a few weeks and someone is sure to snap up these two rifles, I just need to make up my mind. Thanks for the info |

Just talked to James Calhoon. He is now offering complete rifles in 19 Calhoon. He will also be offering loaded ammo for those who don't reload. He will be shipping 20 or so to "The Outdoorsman" or you can buy direct from James. First offering will be a Ruger K77/22 VHZ. The barrel is replaced with a PacNor SS, the magazine is reworked to feed the 19Calhoon through. And, the trigger is reworked. The price for the complete rifle is $775. Second offering will be a CZ527 with work done on magazine with PacNor SS barrel. Price for the CZ will be $795. This model should be available in Feb '02. If you talk to James tell him you heard it from me. There might be some payola coming my way. His website is www.jamescalhoon.com phone # (406) 395-4079. Real nice guy to deal with. Stan in Ar |

Melted Cases........(don't try this at home...) | ![]() | ![]() | |

Hello All, Here is my question. Awhile back I was trying to develop a sub sonic 17 load for back yard pest control. I started off with my 17 PPC, Fed 205M (not the ideal case I know) and IMR PB powder. The bullet I started with was 29gr HPBTs. I started reducing the loads until I was getting into the 1100 fps range and soon found out that the 1/9 twist wouldn't stabize this long bullet. I then switched to the 20gr. V-Max. 2.5gr of PB was still running at 1250fps and producing a crack. 2.2grs would stick the bullet in the throat, but here is where it got all weird...... The neck on the PPC would be melted (one one side) when this combo was fired........ Pin holes and such. I immedatly abandon the whole prodject. Does anyone have any insight as to why this was happening? It's almost like the poweder wa laying up against the bullet base and melting it's way thru the case. I was worried that I might have damaged the bore, but after a good cleaning, it shot excellent as usual...... I was a little nervous with the whole detonation thing as I had read about fast burning powders in large cases. I probably should have never be messing with charges this low...... I have seen reduced loads for the .223 with PB and this is where it all started.....jh |

This is indeed a strange occurence that I have never experienced or heard about. I have used mild loads in my 6BR that would smoke the case - instead of just around the neck, the entire case would get the black look from the smoke. Clean to the case head. I have not experimented with the blue dot type of loads yet and haven't heard of any situations like yours. Sure would tend to make me re-evaluate what I was doing and fix the problem though. Keep us posted on your results if you continue to tinker. |

I'm going to give up the reduced loads in the 17 PPC. I have a CCM that I have beem messing with and will try a subsonic load in that when it warms a little. This case should be a lot better suited to this type of play.... A little off topic in this forum, but has an one played with any of the Whispers cartridges from JD Jones? The 6mm and the 300 really intrege me for some reason. What a switch from the 17 PPC huh? I like the extremes I guess....... jh |
