Tell us more. Where is that you are having the failures? Primer pockets opening? Necks splitting? Or something else. The problem is that if you try to extract all of the potential from the .17 Hornet, case life will be low. The answer to that problem is that hornet brass is dirt cheap and easy to form. I have heard that the Winchester brass is thicker/stronger than the Remington brass, but can't compare since I took the advice and only use Winchester Hornet brass. I also anneal the necks and don't try to hot-rod the 25 grain bullets. I shoot the 20 grain bullets at a pretty stiff load, time will tell how many firings I can get from the cases. |

I had to back my 17 AH loads down quite a bit from the published data, I was getting cases stuck in the chamber after firing what I thought to be a mild load (12.0 gr 1680, 20 vmax). I think I have a tighter than usual chamber or barrel. Remember, a grain of powder in that tiny case is a large percentage, and slight variations in dimensions can change pressue levels real fast.
Also try Lil Gun powder, it works real well for me. There are some loads published in the summer 2001 edition of Small Caliber News. Good Luck. |

Yep, we need more specifics on your problems. It should be no trouble to shoot little screamer groups with your Cooper. I have one batch of brass that has been fired in my Cooper 8 times with loads pushing 20 grains bullets over 3800 fps. I neck size only, and cases never get tight in the stiff little Cooper 38 action. That is good case life with the thin Hornet brass in my book. AA1680 is probably considered the 'standard' powder in the 17 AH, but I've had better luck with 2200 and particularly Vihtavuori N-120, my favorite. AA1680 varies quite a bit from lot to lot and a difference of 2 to 3 tenths of a grain is good for 100 fps! The last batch of 1680 I bought displayed velocity variations of over 100 fps in my 17 AH, not good. I used 2200 a couple of summers ago in a Ruger 77/22 17 AH, with the Hornady 20 Vmax, and was well satisfied. I settled on a load of 13.8 grains using WSR primers. It shot great and ran around 3750 fps. I was lucky enought to hit 3 prairie dogs out of 5 shots at 438 yards with this combo. Yes, the wind was light! Lets hear more about your troubles and see if we can help you out........ Dan C |

12.5 gr of N120 in front of Fed 205 M's pushing 20 gr V-Max's useing either Rem or Win brass. I get 3800 fps. Shot a yote at 150 yrds, heart shot, ran 5 yrds and dropped. I neck size only and am on my 7th loading. LiL Gun is also good but I find it dirty.
Good luck Brooks By the way, my 17 Ack Hornet is also a Cooper and I shot another yote the next day with my 17 HeBee in a Cooper. Love them Coops |

Virgin valley barrels. I called VVCG about them and Steve told me that it was based on a shortened fireball case (Mach IV). Includes brass, and dies. No price, I'll call tonight. He also lists a .22 Hart. Some were encore barrels and some were contender barrels. I'll probably list them here since I am not really in a position to buy them. |

I spoke to him last night. He has 2 encore barrels - 1 chambered in .22 Hart and the other in .17 Hart. He has the dies for both of these - including forming dies and FL sizing dies. So what the heck is a .17 Hart? It is a shortened .17 based on the Mach IV case. Similar to the .17 Squirrel in case capacity I am guessing. He has the reamer specs as well. I told him that I would post it on the board here if he could provide me with the necessary information and pictures. Anybody interested? He wasn't set on a price but did spend a bunch of money to buy them. Imagine that the custom dies were pricey. I have his phone number at home, if anybody is really interested, drop me an e-mail and I'll get it to you. jim |

Dear Mr. LaRue:
Thank you for taking the time to give us your reaction to the magazine and its contents. We value and retain all member input. Watch our April issue for an article on several .17 caliber cartridges, written by a member who is an enthusiastic .17 caliber shooter. And later in the year (possibly our October issue but we don't know for sure yet) I will have an article that includes a .17 that I'm rather fond of ... the .17 Ackley Hornet. I am glad that John responded in such a timely manner but he sure didn't go anywhere near the issue of Steve Timm's fork tongued remarks on the .17's. I am glad to see that they will continue to publish .17 caliber articles but would feel better if they would publish some kind of addendum to his article. They are in a no-win situation and have to make the best of it. I appreciate the VHA publication and look forward to getting it. I will continue to do so at this time until I feel that the content is no longer worth reading. |
