I'm trading in my 700 222 on a 17 Rem classic. After reading so much about 17s I had to have one. I bought a rockchucker kit last year but it hasn't even been out of the box yet. So... I've seen load data for 17rem but i don't recall a primer listed ,ever. Is it assumed that only one primer is appropriate for 17s? I imagine it would be a mild one. this is my first post and have followed this forum for 2 wks, maybe I missed this info.
Thanx' kurt |

There are several primers that do well in the 17's. The most popular is the rem 7 1/2 , but they are not available where I am, so I use FED 205M's in my 17 rem and 17 mach IV. no problem at all with this primer, I probably would stick with them now even if I could get the rems. Also CCI BR4's are suitable for the 17's as well, but I have never tried them. see ya |

I will likely be the exception to your responses about primers; however, I have a .17 Remington and I tried every small rifle primer I could find (CCI, Winchester, Federal, Remington) and found that the Federal 205M primers gave me the smallest velocity standard deviation and smallest extreme velocity spread of all the primers. Many people use the Remington 7 1/2 primers which were "next best" in my little study. Remington 6 1/2 primers are not strong enough and will puncture under the pressure of the .17 Remington (smoke out the bolt). The Federal 205M primers are a little more expensive but I use them exclusively and highly recommend them. |

I have used the CCI450 small rifle mag primers in my 17 javalinea since my uncle got me started with it about 30 yrs ago and havn't had any problem with them, but probably havn't done the testing that others here have done. But they have worked quite well through many prarie dog and coyote hunts. |

For what it's worth: My experience is limted to two .223's, and one .17 HeBee; so this is just for what it's worth: The worst consistent grouping, from all 3 rifles, is with Rem 7.5's Fed 205M's (I've only shot 6-700 or so of them), is about as bad as the Rem's; definitely not worth any extra cost; Win Small Rifle (WSR) consistently produce the best groups, and CCI 450's are close to the same. This is, 2 rifles that shoot 3/4" to 1" with Rem's & Fed's, and 0.4's - 0.6's with WSR's (some 0.3's, but only when I'm lucky). My .17 HeBee also seems to prefer the WSR priomers, but haven't shot enough rounds to reach any meaningful conclusions yet. Wishing you all light winds, tight groups, andf healthy critter populations for the Spring !! :o) JimB
