Knowing this is a TC oriented site, why should a person buy a 17HRM from a Custom Contender Barrel maker or TC, vs a Marlin 17HRM. According to Jamison's article in Shtg Times the Marlin's tried wore a shilen or wiseman barrel? Considering the prices for a Custom Center barrel vs Marlin any comments? On a different site someone echoed that it would be hard to believe that Marlin would sell their product cheaper if it did in fact have the Shilen barrel on it?Somewhere I read PACNOR would have drop in 17HRM barrels for the Ruger version in a few months?

I believe that the early prototype guns from Marlin had Wiseman(SP?) barrels. I am assuming that they will be making their own barrels for the production models. Since they did not make .17 cal barrels for any other gun, I would assume that they had to purchase barrel blanks for the project prototypes. As far as why somebody would get a T/C barrel over the Marlin - I like the Contender for the .17 HMR because I have the one and am sure that it will be as accurate as possible. The custom barrel makers will be able to tighten up the reamer specs for their barrels, more so than I would expect Ruger and Marlin to be willing to do so. As for myself, I may have a Marlin and a Contender barrel (Bullberry).

Talking to Shilen this week, they are reaming barrels right now with the .17 HRM round. They will set up for any application now, so I guess we wil be able to re-barrel for just about anything. Anybody know if a long rifle action woould be strong enough for the .17 rf? Lotsa those rifles in the Pawn Shops....cheap! Justa thought.....Benny

Single shot loading might be possible, if aukwards, ejection could be a chore though.
