Do any of the single shot barrel makers chamber for the .17 CCM, and is brass available for it? I notice that Todd Kindler includes this cartridge in his load manual, but it is not listed in the available chamberings for Cooper Firearms, the one who invented it.

I know that there are several CCM shooters that lurk here so I imagine that you'll hear from them also. My understanding is that the brass is the largest issue with the CCM - that is getting good brass for it. I also imagine that Cooper would chamber for the CCM if you were to want one. I think that Bullberry and Virgin Valley also chamber for it. You may want to search back on the site (way back now probably) to look for the CCM discussion.

Brass is available at Schroeder in Cal. But why go that route when you can have a .17HMR??? If you need brass email me and I can get Phone number for you!

The .17 HMR looks like fun, but it's about 500 fps short of what I'm looking for. Ammo is also expensive and not reloadable. I'm not stuck on the 17CCM, just want something in that power range. Some of the other little cartridges like the 17 Flickertail, which uses a 32 H&R Magnum case, or comparable ones that use a 30 Carbine or 357 Maximum case actually look better to me. I may end up going with the 17AH for strictly practical reasons, but I don't like the thin Hornet cases, never have.

Theo, Ive been shooting the .17 Pee Wee since 1967, and have fired probably 5000 rounds. Have quite a following in meat. All the way from Sparrows (using primer and Bee Bee only) all the way up to a 212 lb Pa whitetail. These cases have to be annealed. The best load I've come up with is 10.5 gr. 4227. This gives about 3750 fps. Military Carbine cases are easy to come by, but the commercial cases seem to work better in the necking process. I spent alot of time using the Military rounds, but after using some commercial....I quite on the Mil Surplus. Gud Luk...Benny

Benny, do you shoot the 17 Pee Wee in a Contender? Would like to see the reamer diagram if you know who has one. And do you use the Tempilac method to anneal cases or just spin & heat them before dropping in water? What weight bullet is it than you get 3750 with. Thanks.

Theo, I'm shooting it in a 20" barrel on a much modified M1-Carbine. I anneal them with a device that my Dad and I built years ago. It's a small conveyer belt with 2 propane torch tips aimed at the case. By varying the speed of the belt, you can adjust the amount of heat depending on the case being annealed. Immediately after being heated the cases drop into a can of water. 18 gr bullets give about 3900 fps...20 gr bullets give 3750, and 25 gr bullets give 3575. I don't have a good view of a reamer. I have one that Dick Saunders sent me years ago, but it's not very clear. Someone here should have one. I'll bet Todd Kindler has a good one...Bob Shutz of Shutzen Gun Works (Olympia Arms) did the chamber work on mine. In fact the loading dies and the barrel all are stamped 17/30 Shutzen. There are several versions out there but they don't vary by much. I would like to have a Contender Barrel chambered for this round. I think it would be a good round for a 12- 14" barrel in a Contender. Benny

Schroeder is very good, his brass is high quality. He is also very prompt. The biggest reason the .17CCM over the .17 HMR is 3200-3300fps with 20 grain Bergers and great accuracy.

Yes, I would like the Schroeder's phone number. Can you post it or email it to me please? Thanks.

Had to add my 2 cents on the CCM comments. The little 17 CCM is a neat little cartridge and I got 18 grain Bergers to about 3100 with good accuracy. The brass from Schroeder is good brass and is strong as all get out. If I remember right it holds about 8% less powder. If you use it, be sure to fireform before you go to full velocity loads. I was using Lil Gun, 1680, 4227, N120 and 296. I don't think Dan'll chamber for the CCM, at least he wouldn't a year or so ago. That being said, chambering for the 17 Ack and loading down to 3,150 would be easier in regards to component gathering. But I have to tell you; I have spent hours and hours playing with my little 17 CCM Cooper. It's more fun than you could imagine.

have been shooting a 21 in Bullberry Bull for my contender using Schroder brass. brass if turned from hornet brass. all cases have turning marks. lots of fun. good kills on birds and small animals. had some trouble with racoons. going to S>D> for P.D. in the spring. would like to source out some other kinds of brass like Cooper or Fiochi if any one has any. will prove to be better than the new 17 hrm even though i will probly get one too.

Maybe it's just my machine, but when I look at the index page of the forum, it doesn't show Jim's reply to this thread, Nailman's reply, or any of the replies to Nailman. Only Hal's two posts, and (hopefully) now mine as well. On the subject of the CCM, anybody know why Cooper stopped selling brass and now refuses to chamber for it? Also, how does the 17CCM compare to the 17 Squirrel in case capacity?

There was at least four sources of brass. The first was lathe turned and was manufactured for Cooper between 1991 and 1993. This was turned on a lathe out of bar stock here in the States and is a good product. I’ve shot full loads with this brass with good success. The secret here is to anneal the brass to prevent the necks from splitting. The next brass was some high quality drawn brass that was produced by Fiocchi. Later Fiocchi produced some drawn brass for Cooper that was called “One Shot” V270. Although the availability is better than both the original lathe and drawn brass, it doesn’t hold up very well to high-pressure loads. With light loads I‘ve shot the “one shot” brass as often as 10 times. But if you load it up with a +3,000 fps charge you’ll open up the primer pocket pretty quick. If you keep it in the 2,700 or less fps range and it’ll hold up pretty well. I have a little of everything but if I was working up a new rifle I would first try Schroeder. At least at this time that is renewable. I still play with the Fiocchi brass working up <2,500 fps loads using 20 grain Berger or V Max and it works fine. On the other hand, Schroeder can be brought up to 3,150 fps with 18 grain Berger's

I have not been able to get the lightweight Berger bullets anywhere. Are they still making them? Is there a reliable source to get them from? Have you tried any of the 19 grain Calhoon bullets because that is the only bullet under 20 grains that I can find.

Havn't tried to buy the 18 grns recently, but I would start with Kindler. I heard they were going to stop producing the 15 grns (as far a I know this is only a rumor)and picked up a 1200 of them last year. ALthough they don't list them in their catalog Midway carries Bergers and they may be a source. No personal experience with Calhoons. Have some Hammetts and they shoot very well too. They are 18.6 gr.

Cook, Thanks very much for the information. If it's not too much trouble, could you send me a copy of the case drawing you mentioned in the post above? Thanks again,
Cannon
