Hi all, Need to buy a new one to temporarily satisfy "The Itch". I want something to be used for a junker gun, i.e., NOT a Cooper. Something I can paint and haul into the woods and not worry about scratching, etc. Am thinking along the lines of a 700 in 17 Rem, but would like a shorter barrel, i.e., 20" (?). I have a bud that can cut the barrel and recrown, but don't want to get into the added expense of rechambering. This will be a 200 yard max gun, very light, crows, 'hogs, feral cats and dogs, fox, etc. I am thinking Blue Dot loads for lower end velocities, with a 20-25 gr. to be about 2400-2500, and normal loads up to about 3500. Can I reasonably expect the upper limit of that velocity with a 20" barrel? I would appreciate your input, and will let you know how it progresses. And no, I don't want a 17 HRM. Richard Jones

You won't have a problem reaching 3500 fps out of a 20 inch barrel. With a 15" barrel on my contender, my load is launching Clint Starke's 25 grain bullet at 3700+ fps. I would think that you will be able to achieve 3900 fps out of the 20" barrel. I think that the perfect gun for what you are looking for is a Model 7 in .17 Rem. Too bad Remington hasn't figured this out, and used ones cost a pile of money. They only offered the Model 7 in .17 Remington for a short while but it would be a fine gun. I am thinking of painting my Javelina when it is done, just not sure I'll have the nerve to do it. |

Thanks Jim, that is the sort of info I am looking for. Am also thinking about a T/C, figure to buy it as a pistol and convert it to rifle. That way, maybe I can get a bit more exotic caliber...... just need something new to play with.,,,,,,, Rich |

DO IT, DO IT, DO IT!!! I loved my 17 AH. The HeBee may be better for larger stuff like coyotes. Whatever you get make sure it has a rim in the T/C. Makes hunting in cold with gloves easier and also case alighnment. Mike |

Do it. I have a short 10" hornet barrel and now a 21" ackley hornet barrel that actually belongs to my brother-in-law. I'll be getting to load and shoot for his 21" barrel. Hard to beat the ackley hornet or ackley bee for a contender barrel. |

Rich Why not build a 14? You can get a barrel from Jeff for just a little more than a standard barrel, and have a drop dead kill
you wanted ideas...

Russ, Ys, I did want ideas, and I thought a bit about the 14, but I am not sure I can get the range that I need. One nice thing about the T/C, I can start with the 17 AH and add the 14 later. Would make a great Christmas present for me!!!!! Will have to leave some literature lying around for the wife to see...... Thanks. Rich |

Hey Rich, I have an Encore (upgraded wood) and the following barrels, scope bases and all the loading dies.
17 Squirrel (shortened 22 Hornet) 22 squirrel (shortened 22 Hornet) 6mm K-Hornet 256 Super Mag (357 Maximum necked down) Would consider selling all and certianly would look a a trade. I can send pics if you are interested. Thanks Brooks |

rich, i have two 17ah one by wessinger the other by schauer both are ruger 77 rebareled with shilen barrels. one is a 2 contour the other a streight taper to .725. odly both shoot about the same, about .50 . the no 2 contour has killed 325 grey foxes, 8 coyotes, one badger, gobs of crows and about 40 depression chickens. get your self a 17ah you won't be sorry. foxhunter bubba |

Rich, It is difficult finding new contender frames, but I heard a week ago from Fred Smith at Bullberry that he has a line on 6 new frames. You won't save much on a used frame, I suggest you buy a new one while they are still available. They have quit making them and they are getting very scarce, so don't drag your feet. The G2 frames should be out soon enough also, but not sure if they will be "improved" or not. |

That is incredible. How has bullet performance been on those foxes, do you ever get exit holes? Seems like the Hornet may be the perfect fox medicine. We rarely see a grey fox around my area but have plenty of reds. Are you calling all of these foxes or trapping them and then using the hornet to deliver the final blow? I would love to hear more about the fox hunting? |

I MADE A TOTAL OF SIX STANDS KILLING 18 FOXES. THREE STANDS HAD FIVE FOXES SHOW UP ON EACH STAND(ODDLEY ENOUGH THIS ISN'T ALL THAT UNCOMMON)THE OTHER THREE STANDS PRODUCED ONE EACH. THERE WERE NO ESCAPE PRISINORS ON THIS DAY. I SIMOLY STOPED CALLING PUT THE GUN AWAY AFTER ALL AT THIS RATE THEY WOULD CALL THIS KILLING NOT HUNTING.I'M SHURE I COULD HAVE KILLED A LOT MORE BUT ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. I DO SHOOT FOXES WITH A 22 HORHET AND A K HORNET. THE BEST BULLET SO FAR IS THE CALHOON 46 GR WHICH PRODUCE NO EXITS ON WELL PLACED SHOTS. IF YOU CAN TELL ME HOW TO SCAN THE PICTURE I WILL DO IT FOR YOU. |
