Is that your .17 rem sako at the Sportsman in Cheyenne? I saw the rifle on Wednesday A.M. On my way to Denver, going back north I had made up my mind to buy it. If it didn't shoot I was going to Mach IV it. Then, I broke down in Loveland. Damn fuel pump/filter/sending unit module crumped on me. I was stranded north of Thermopolis 2 weeks before with what I thought was bad gas. Nope. $489.00 and a 6 hour wait pretty much chewed up my fun money. So, If it's not yours, have you seen the rifle? Garcia L461? with a Bushnell in conetrol mounts? Well gotta go be a nurse to my ailing wife, flu-bug bit her hard. Gary

17 Ackley Hornet--How Sweet It Is!

Hi everyone. The last time I posted on this board was last July or August. I was trying to decide among 17 Cooper, 17 Squirrel, and 17 Ackley Hornet for my first-ever investment in a Bullberry, and was looking for advice. Someone replied that he was trying to make the exact same decision, and would like to hear about my decision. Well, after doing my homework, the 17 Hornet was the logical choice, and I called Fred mid-August. Decided on a 21” Bull with 1:10 twist, and planned to use an existing 6-18X scope. Then came the dreaded wait; I was like a kid waiting for Christmas! Finally, it came!
I fire-formed my brass with 6 grs of Bullseye and a cotton plug, and went out today with my first loads. I didn’t expect much, as you could see that the case shoulders were still rounded and not completely formed. So, I used whatever odd primers I had laying around, wasn’t real diligent about powder weight, and set the length to the first setting that didn’t hit the rifling. I used a 25 gr Vmax that I had stopped using in my 17 Rem to get rid of them.
This morning it was 39 degrees with a moderate and variable crosswind. Not exactly a day that I would normally shoot benchrest. My observation about the case geometry was correct as I had to hit many of the primers two to four times to get ignition due to the gap at the shoulder, and after firing, the shoulders were clearly more defined. About 15 rounds got the scope in the neighborhood, and I was amazed that the subsequent groups were running about 1.2”. One group was 0.9” and four of the five were under 0.5”! If this barrel shoots like this in this weather, with marginal loads, and off a Harris bipod, I can’t begin to imagine what it will do when I’ve got a chance to work up a real load! Thank you Fred! I almost wish I hadn’t quit smoking 15 years ago so that I could stop now and save the money for my next Bullberry! Maybe I can sell Rem 700's for scrap because I don't think it will be much fun shooting them from now on.
