Is that your .17 rem sako at the Sportsman in Cheyenne? I saw the rifle on Wednesday A.M. On my way to Denver, going back north I had made up my mind to buy it. If it didn't shoot I was going to Mach IV it. Then, I broke down in Loveland. Damn fuel pump/filter/sending unit module crumped on me. I was stranded north of Thermopolis 2 weeks before with what I thought was bad gas. Nope. $489.00 and a 6 hour wait pretty much chewed up my fun money. So, If it's not yours, have you seen the rifle? Garcia L461? with a Bushnell in conetrol mounts? Well gotta go be a nurse to my ailing wife, flu-bug bit her hard. Gary

Gary, I HAVE seen it, don't know where it came from. A friend of mine just went there today and laid it away........I was tempted, but he wanted it bad so in my infinite compassion, let him have it. He is going to 'Mach IV' it also! Sorry to hear about your bum trip. Myself, I'm nursing my flu-bitten wife today also. I had my fun with it last Saturday.......And it is SO nice out today!!!!!!! Sorry to hear about your missus. I think mine will live (and they say men are babies). BTW, we're expecting our first in June. As for the rifle, I hope your pal shoots it first before screwing on a new tube. Post a report on how it shoots for him would you? Gary

Hi everyone. The last time I posted on this board was last July or August. I was trying to decide among 17 Cooper, 17 Squirrel, and 17 Ackley Hornet for my first-ever investment in a Bullberry, and was looking for advice. Someone replied that he was trying to make the exact same decision, and would like to hear about my decision. Well, after doing my homework, the 17 Hornet was the logical choice, and I called Fred mid-August. Decided on a 21” Bull with 1:10 twist, and planned to use an existing 6-18X scope. Then came the dreaded wait; I was like a kid waiting for Christmas! Finally, it came!
I fire-formed my brass with 6 grs of Bullseye and a cotton plug, and went out today with my first loads. I didn’t expect much, as you could see that the case shoulders were still rounded and not completely formed. So, I used whatever odd primers I had laying around, wasn’t real diligent about powder weight, and set the length to the first setting that didn’t hit the rifling. I used a 25 gr Vmax that I had stopped using in my 17 Rem to get rid of them.
This morning it was 39 degrees with a moderate and variable crosswind. Not exactly a day that I would normally shoot benchrest. My observation about the case geometry was correct as I had to hit many of the primers two to four times to get ignition due to the gap at the shoulder, and after firing, the shoulders were clearly more defined. About 15 rounds got the scope in the neighborhood, and I was amazed that the subsequent groups were running about 1.2”. One group was 0.9” and four of the five were under 0.5”! If this barrel shoots like this in this weather, with marginal loads, and off a Harris bipod, I can’t begin to imagine what it will do when I’ve got a chance to work up a real load! Thank you Fred! I almost wish I hadn’t quit smoking 15 years ago so that I could stop now and save the money for my next Bullberry! Maybe I can sell Rem 700's for scrap because I don't think it will be much fun shooting them from now on.

Glad you are having good luck with your TC , they are fun. I have a 22"bull for my encore in 17 m4 that shoots the same way. But I am selling that one. I am interested in a win or rem sa if you decide to sell one for scrap : ). If you are interested in some sort of swap/sale of an old shooter let me know. I want to build another 17m4 on a sporter weight repeater, have a great chunk of maple to carve for it already , just need the base for my project. see ya how about some pics of the new shooter

Jim, glad you like the new toy. I'd be willing to help you rid yourself of those pesky 700's. I'll beat scrap price somewhat.......... Dan C

Familiar story, thanks for sharing. I haven't heard anybody report poorly on the Ackley hornet, it is a sweet round. The barrel that you have sounds very familiar, my brother-in-law just got one also. 21" bullberry barrel in .17 Ackley hornet for the contender. WE have formed all of the brass for it but haven't shot it yet. He is working on finishing the stock set but we'll have it out soon enough. I have a 10" bullberry barrel in the same caliber that will shoot less than an inch - simply amazing thing for me.

I really like my 17AH , my favorite load is 12.1 grains of H4198 SC , it burns clean and the velocity is great to ! Oh yeah , the bullet is a 25gr Berger MEF . It will surprise you on how far you can kill a PD . My rifle is a Farley Firefly action and Shilen barrel with a MPI thumbhole stock . Thanks! Mark.

WOW, that is neat. Is it set up like a benchrest rifle in a 3" BR stock and such. What barrel are you using and how is the accuracy of this rifle. What boltface is your Farley? Have you experienced any case loss with the 25 grain bullets at the higher loads?

Jim , the firefly action is a smaller action , like a XP100 . I have a BR stock for it , but right now it is in a MPI thumbhole . I have 2 Farley actions , one is the hornet and one is the 17BR and I have 22BR barrel also for the same action . The 17 AH is a Shilen and the 17BR is a Pac Nor 9 twist. Case loss is not bad , but yes I do loss some . Thanks! Mark

I have a 9 twist PacNor that is being chambered now in .17 Javelina for my Rem 700. A .17 BR with a 9 twist barrel - are you shooting 30 grain bullets and how fast? Do you have any copper fouling with the BR and the pacnor barrel? I am hoping to shoot 30 grain bullets at 3800 fps with the Javelina. Time will tell, just got 200 cases formed.

Jim , I can't say enough about the 17 BR , there is not much fouling with the VV550 powder I use in the 17BR , I moly my bullets and have not noticed any copper fouling . I clean every 10 or 15 rounds though . I use it as coyote rifle mostly , so it does not get a lot rounds shot though it like a PD rifle. You will really like your Pac Nor barrel , I have 2 17 BR rifles both have Pac Nor . If I ever buy another it will be Pac Nor . Good luck with your 17 Javalina , that sounds like a nice roun to play with . Thanks! Mark
