I HAVE A SHILEN SS BARREL CHAMBERED FOR A 17 CCM .IT IS FOR A COOPER MODEL 21, IT HAS STRAIT TAPER 1 IN 10 TWIST. THE QUESTION IS CAN THIS BARREL BE SAFELY FLUTED? I HAVE HEARD CONFLICTING OPINIONS .

I would suspect that you wouldn't see any ill effects from the fluting. I know of a number of BR competitors who flute their barrels and they are still competitive. Some actually believe that there is an advantage to a barrel that has been fluted. Either way, with a cartridge like the .17 CCM, I doubt that you could ever measure any advantage or disadvantage from the fluting. You would be doing it strictly for weight reduction, as barrel heat dispersion wouldn't be an issue for the CCM.

I had my last .17 barrel fluted, then cyro treated. Skip Otto in Grand Junction Colorado did the fluting. This Pac-Nor barrel happens to be the best .17 barrel I've ever had, and I have had several. This is one of those do at your own risk issues, but I personally think, the benifts out weigh the risks.
