Hi Fellas, this looks like the right place for smallcal stuff. I am considering building a 17 AH based off the Ruger m77 hornet action. Has any one done that here? Were there any problems..mag length etc. Can that action be tuned decent..trigger? Any better ideas for a bolt-repeater? thanks in advance..Tim

tim i have two of the ruger 77 in 17 ackley hornet.it is a fairly easy conversion. i would suggest wessinger, i belive he is in north carolina. he uses the proper reamer and does tune the action and trigger. if you glass bed the action remember the recoil lug is at the rear of the magizine box. also the distance at the front is a point to pay attention to. if the bedding isoff metal will hit metal and push the barrel up. good shooting bob

tim both are sheilen one ia ss streight taper to .685 the other is a no 2 contour .60 at the muzzle.
check your bolt to see if the two mated surfaces are both flat ,try holding the bold at both ends push both ends tward the middle and try to rock the end . if it rocks they are not flat, this will need to be corrected for best accuracy.bob

I have a 77/22 that I chambered into 22 K Hornet. Lot of fun getting it to shoot but like others described there are some things to consider such as bedding, the need (or not) for barrel pressure and the rear-locking bolt. Finally got it to shoot an honest ¾” after a lot of tinkering. I’m going to sell my K Hornet and start over with a standard Hornet and have George Wessinger barrel it into a 17 Ack. If you need his number it’s 860-345-3563. He did a Ruger 1B for me a couple of years back and did a great job on it. I’m curious why no one recommended the CZ 527 as a candidate for the 17 Ackley conversion. You can buy them from a couple of sources for $450. That’s within a $100 of the Ruger and it’s a true mini-Mauser action. I’m putting things together to buy one from someone in Texas and will have it chambered into another 22 K Hornet. Why the switch? I like the way the little Ruger handles and think it would be a great 100 - 150 yard squirrel rifle. And I am just head over heals for the little 22 K Hornet cartridge. And I always wanted to try the CZ so I’m going to give it a go. Good luck. Either way the 17 Ack is a great little cartridge. I have one in Cooper and get >3,750 without even breaking a sweat.

cook before you get a cz 527 take a look at the new charles daly mini mausers. i looked at a 527 a couple days ago, we tried a 30 carbine shell in the magizine it fit perfectly. i was considering a 17 pee wee (17-30 carbine) with this cartridge you can achive velocity s of 3700-3800 with a 25 gr bullet.

I went back to the link and looked at the CD's for the first time and decisions are getting tougher and tougher. For < $360 you could have a barreled action from Charles Daly. Virgin Valley could drop it into a piece of nice wood for probably $200 or less. You would have a custom rifle for less than $750. Looks like a great choice for a 22 Javilina, Mach IV, Vartarg, or even a Tac 20. I wonder where you go from here to get details on specifics such a trigger, quality etc. I may have had a limited life but I had never heard of Charles Daly outside of the shotgun arena. Thanks for pointing it out to me.

cook, i have built several rifles using this action, two 221 fb's a 6x45 and a 17 rem. all these guns shoot under .50 some under .25. the only drawback is the metric thread size, the gunsmith must be set up for metric. as far as the trigger it is the same trigger as ant std. mauser. i plan to either use one for a 17 pee wee or the cz brno 527.
i'm realy supprised no one has taken note of the fact that the mini mauser comes in a .453 head size which is the size for a 22 ppc or 17 ppc or 20 ppc. the action retails for 289.00. 289.00 + 200.00 + 79.00 + 375.00= 945.00 for a complete custom action, stock, trigger, chambered and fit barrel. ps the trigger is optional as the stock trigger is exc.

So little time and so may choices. Went to the CD web site and was surprised. I never heard of a Charles Daly rifle before this. Does anyone have any first hand experience with them?

I'm getting ready to break in my 17 VSS bbl and am ready to load for the task. Can I use 21.4 gr of IMR 4064 (a starting load in the 1973 Hornady manual), Win Small Rifle primer, and 25 gr Hornady bullet for this? I won't be able to get to a gun show for a month or so to get another powder or the Rem 7 1/2 primers. I'm concerned about using the WSR primer and wonder if it will be strong enough with the light amount of 4064. The eventual plan is to go with the Starke 30 gr moly bullet, Rem 7 1/2 primer, and another powder for actual load development once the bbl is broken in. Powder suggestions for this bullet would also be appreciated. Thanks, Dan

Dan, You should be fine, using the WSR primer. As an aside, may I suggest using the Federal 205M primer instead of the Rem 7 1/2? Although the 7 1/2 is a fairly tough primer.....the 205M is almost as tough, and will show much more "crater warning", before blanking. It's for this reason, and the fact that they're a top flight benchrest primer, that I long ago switched to them. Just food for thought. Friend Of The 17

Thanks for your help, Kevin. And I've noticed that a few other folks also like the Fed 205M primer, and this is a good explanation. I just might go with them. Even though it's just a factory rifle, some things can still add up to make a difference. You just can't make chicken salad with chicken crap, but I'll do the best I can. Thanks to you and everybody else who are helping to decrease my ignorance. I just love this board. Dan
