Northwest Custom Projectiles? 60-gr bullets: BC of 0.355 | ![]() | ![]() | |

Has anyone used their .224 caliber bullets before? They list them as 60 gr with a BC of 0.355, which is a lot higher than most 60-gr SP's. For example, my Hornady manual lists their 60-gr SP's at 0.264, and their 68-gr HPBT at 0.330. Also, Sierra lists their 77-gr MatchKing at 0.362. I could see a lot of use in a 60-gr bullet with the BC of a 77-gr one. Price isn't too bad either at $15.49/100. Do you think they would stabilize in a 1-12 twist barrel at 3000 fps? Any info? Hey Bob, the dies I have for the Pee Wee were made by Bob Schutz, He did the conversion for me. At the time he called his business Schutzen Gun Works. Now he uses Olympia Arms, as he has moved to Olympia WA. I used the Pee Wee, because it was introduced by P.O. Akley back in '48. or '49, somewhere along about that time, and was based on the .30 Carbine case. With a rebarrel or relined barrel on the Carbine, it gave you a semi-Auto in .17 Cal. When Bob converted one, he also provided a means of turning the Auto function off. The gun I have has very little similarity to a standard carbine. All the slide has been rotated under the barrel and all you see is the Bolt handle which you can't change much. It still looks like the Carbine handle. Other than that it looks alot like the early Remington 600. It can be loaded with 4227 with speeds up to 38-3900 FPS. However with only one bold lug, 35-3600 is a more realistic figure. I cracked a bolt lug about 10 years ago and found it upon inspection before Engine turning it. Then the cold chills ran up and down my spine. As for used dies, I doubt you're going to have much luck. If you do decide to go that way, use the Civilian brass. The surplus is just not worth the effort, even when annealing. You have to neck it down to .22 then go to .17. I have been shooting it since 1963. It has its place. There are several Co's that still make the Dies. Gud Luk, and if I can help let me know...Benny |

benny,
thanks for the info, i had heard you had to anneal the 17 pee wee cases . i assume it is to keep the necks from spliting. once in a while i get a split keck on my 17 rem. i have 2 17 ackley hornets and i was looking for a more modern cartridge in a bolt gun ie. rimless and stronger. bob |

Maybe I'm the only one, but has anyone else ever had a rifle like this? It shoots like a dream...no problems there. But, EVERYTIME that I take it hunting, weird things happen. Something goes wrong with the stalk, other hunters blunder into the area (never mind that it took me 30 minutes to walk in because the snow was so deep and no one had been down the abandoned road into the area in two weeks), 2 deer get up from their daybed in a slough area I'm skirting and run right toward the fox (who promptly goes down the den), a small plane flies over me about 400 yds. overhead, scaring the fox I'm stalking, etc. etc. I've had a lot of weird things happen when predator hunting over the years, but never has a string of bad luck followed one individual rifle like this! Anybody else ever had a gun with 'Bad JuJu'? -Al. Modified by Al Nyhus at Sun, Feb 10, 2002, 19:46:24 |

I thought I was the only one! I had a 17MachIV that would shoot tiny groups when I was at the range, and seemed to beg to be hunted with. The only problem is that in the three years of hunting I did with this rifle I only shot one coyote. Whenever I took this rifle from the rack I wouldn't see any game! It never failed. No rabbits. No coyote. I used to joke with my hunting buddy that the word was out in the animal kingdom about my hot .17 M4. He finally got to insisting that I heave it home. He called it the "Jonah Rifle" and would insist I took my old Remington triple-deuce when we varminted together. I can't deny that the "bad karma" of that .17 sped it's departure into other hands. ~Andrew |

Al, if you're talking about that new Javelina, maybe you just ought to unload the thing. I might be talked into doing you a huge favor and taking it off your hands. That's what friends are for, right? Life is too short to hunt with jinxed guns.... Dan C |

As a matter of fact the 17 Spirits have today, once again, blessed me with another 17 Javelina(0.196" neck). This one's a 22" medium heavy SS, 9" twist, Sonny France barrel on a Sako L461 action. The stock is yet to be determined. I'm planning on this calling rifle shooting the Kindler 27gr.(0.090" long boat-tail) bullet. Haven't decided on the scope yet.....maybe another Lewy 3-9XAO Compact. adjustments. I was a tag-a-long most of the time from 14 to 20, then I saw the light one day as he couldn't get the caps on fast enough as I opened a gate. Haven't hunted with him since, been 20 years. Sometimes Karma has a first name. Gary (no not that one) |

The reason you have bad Karma is cause I used
all the good reamer Karma before I sent it to you. Keep the faith. Everything runs in cycles. Think of all the lucky hunts you'll have coming your way to balance out all the bad ones. However if you really want to get depressed you can check your e-mail and read about the nice little fox I shot yesterday at 200 plus yards. Pat |
