I'm pretty sure Richards MicroFit does them. Maybe Claude Gatewood as well?

I have a Browning Micromedallion with a Shilen barrel (.17 AH). I fireformed with 5.0 gr Bullseye which resulted in cases almost completely formed (shoulder not quite sharp). Then I full length sized and trimmed cases, loaded with 10.3 gr. Lil' Gun and 20 gr. V-Max (.010" off lands). Load was way too hot. I backed off to 9.8 and still a little warm. 9.6 gave the occassional flattened primer. I've seen data showing as much as 11.0 of Lil' gun with 20 gr. V-Max, so I was surprised 10.3 was so hot. Any insight from you .17 AH veterans? Based on 9.6 in nearly fully formed cases, I'm doubtful I'll get anywhere near 11.0 gr. without getting too hot. Any thoughts? I won't have a place to chrono loads until April. Thanks!

As you found out, your data is too hot! My experience with LG is close to yours. Perhaps is varies quite a bit lot to lot, but here is what I got in a 24" Shilen barreled Ruger 77 and 20 gr. V-maxes (bare). 9.4 gr. 3675 fps
9.7 gr. 3776 fps
10.0 gr. 3844 fps
10.3 gr. 3960 fps (!!) In my rifle, anything over 10.0 grains would eventually loosen primer pockets. And accuracy was none too great. I eventually abandoned it as being simply too hot for the 17 AH case. Load fill ratio was only in the 60% range. There are better powders available, like N-120, 1680, and 2200. If you are interested, I can mail you some of my data in .doc format. Dan C

H-4198 does work good especially with heavier bullets, but I shy away from it since it does not meter well enough for this small case. Gotta weigh each charge........yawn. I do load it occasionally with Kindler 23's though, great combo at about 3650 fps. Smokes the 20's at long range. What rifle do you shoot in 17 AH Mark?? Dan C

Hey Dan! I use 4198 in all my 17AH's , the only one I have left is a cheapo Farley Firefly action with a Shilen barrel . I will buy a CZ and convert it to 17AH when I find another good buy on one. I had one and let a good friend talk me out of it , and have sure missed not having it around . It was a great turkey rifle ! I found two at the Tulsa gun show this year and thought I had one of them bought , when I went back to the table to buy it the dealer went up on the price he had origanly quoted me , needless to say I did not buy it! The next time I reload for it Iam going to try some of the VV powders. Thanks! Mark

hi guys-
i am new at reloading so bear with me. i have a 17 rem bullberry barrel for my encore. using a stony point oal tool, i came up with a final round that measures 2.253 using hornady 20 grain vmax's. the listed max COL for 17 rem is 2.150, that is with a hornady 25 grain, the only COL i could find. why is mine COL so much more. this is a fairly new barrel 75 rounds only, all factory loads. i took the stony point measurement 10 times, all were within .004 of eachother. am i safe here or not? could my barrel have a really long throat? or am i missing something in this picture.thanks for any help. i am not going to load anything until i figure this out or get the ok from some more experience loaders. andy

Clean Kill COL is set by Sporting Arms Ammunition Manufacturer Institute (SAAMI). They also set the Maximum Average Pressure for each cartridge. (17 Rem is 52,000 C.U.P.)
You can exceed the COL., but I would start at 20% below maximum, using load data for a 25gr. bullet. This will work for your 20 gr. V-Max. A couple of weeks ago, I loaded some 20 gr. V-Max in my 17 Rem with a COL of 2.200 (70 thousanths over SAAMI COL) and they shot very well. Nyle Howsmon
