Bob,
Man! I would hesitate to remove the foreend, let alone cut the barrel! That rifle shoots like my Benny-actioned .218 Bee which I thought was in a class all by itself. What kind of velocities are you getting?? I am using a 14.5 grns of 4198 with a 40 grn Sierra HP and getting spectacular groups. I have been wanting to try 2200 for some time now. Any enlightenment would be most appreciated. ~Andrew

FB: Thanks for the load information. As other's have said, It's your rifle. I wouldn't dare try to improve on it, myself. I am a man of Science but I can't help feel that shooting is laced with a bit of alchemy. It'd be a shame to jinx such a fine rifle! The old expression "Don't fix what ain't broke" comes to mind... Good luck. (Long live the Bee and it's fans!)~Andrew

Sounds like you sure got a good one. This is the exact Ruger that I would love to have. If it shoots that well, I would not even be tempted to cut it off BUT it is your gun and you have to live with the extra length. Most competent gunsmiths should be able to do this work without much problem. I understand that Wessinger does good work on the #1's. Cook on this site has a nice one chambered in .17 Hebee that was built by Wessinger.

jim, you wouldn't belive the differance in quotes i have gotten to do this job. they range from $50-60.00 to $150.00 to 200.00 and the last one was $300.00. all are well known gunsmiths of national fame. yes it is a great shooter but its not exactly what i want the way it is.why would anyone want a 26 in barrel on a 218 bee? for that matter why doesn't ruger make the 77 22 in a 221 fb or make a 17 based on a 30 carbine for that action, why not a 77 22 in 218 bee?

Yeah, I agree with Jim about Wessinger. He does great work on Ruger's. Also agree about shortening the barrel. Because of the Ruger action you can keep the longer barrel and still have a nice package. My HeBee has a 24" barrel and the total rifle is still only 41" OAL.

cook, 41 inches is great ,its the 9+ pounds thar the gun weighs that i realy object to as well as the balance of the gun. by the way it was wessinger who wanted $300.00 to shorten the barrel. i have a wessinger built ruger 77 in 17 ah. and its super.

Yeah, your right about the weight. I have a medium barrel on it and it's probably as heavy as it sounds. But cycling rounds throught a Ruger in a prairie dog town is a genuine pleasure. Case extraction, strength of action etc makes the Ruger a good choice for high pressure varmint loads. I dropped down to 3850 shooting 22 gr Bergers but was safely shooting the 20 V max at +4,075 fps. The 218 cases used for the HeBee held up great and accuracy was super.

cook, the 218 case is so cute i just may have to build myself oneof those 17 heebee's. if the 218 bee doesn't shoot after i lighten it. i may just have to rebarrel it gee i wonder whar i could chamber it in? bob

Has anyone had a chance to try the 20gr Vmax on PD's, running them around 3300fps. A terminal preformance report is what I'm after. My Blue Dot loads in my new 17 rem barrel from pac-nor, shoots in the 4s and 5s plus keep the barrel cooler than full house loads. I'll have to make this 17 do until I can build a something smaller.

I used them in my 17 HeBee last year and ran them about 3900fps. Out to 200 they open a dog up, past that they just tip over. I shot one out as far as 350 with it and it just tipped and kicked for a sec. No exit upon inspection. Mike

Hello Stevie,
This is off your subject, but I have a question concerning Pac-nor .17cal barrels. On their website they offer 24" max length for .17cal barrels. It that what you have? I was hoping for a 26" barrel from them. May have to go to Shilen for the 26" barrel. Did you have pac-nor do the rebarrel job? Thanks for your time, Larry

Larry, the barrel I got from Chris (at pac-nor)is a 22" SS prefit, straight tapered to .685 at the muzzle for a savage action. I did my own fitting to the action which in case of a savage their really plug and play as it where. This gun is a 7 1/2 pound walking varminter. I have owned a few of the high dollar barrels from other makers and they have shot well, however over the past 10 year or so Chris has recieved all my orders. He listens to your wants and won't try to sell you something you don't need, plus the price is right. I have never screwed on one of his barrels that didn't shoot in the .5's or better and in the case of this 17 rem. it stays in the .2s to .3s and that is his standard match barrel, not his supermatch. Getting back to your 26" question you'd have to ask him if that would be a problem to make, though I don't think it would. As a side note his barrels tend to be fast, my 22" shoots the 25gr HP at 4412 fps and 20 gr Vmax at 4651 fps with no pressure problems. Those speeds are not what I maintain, just fun to know you can get there and still hit something if you like. I guest I'm alittle biased but I try to keep my life simple, namely if Chris makes it , it will shoot.

The reason I ask about the 26" .17cal barrels is for a Browning B78 falling block rifle. I want pac-nor to duplicate the factory contour of my 22-250rem varmint barrel. If he can't I'll have him rebarrel my Win M70 (pre-64) with a 24" barrel in .17PPC. TOOOOOO many projects, not enough money. Take care and thank you for your time, Larry
