I am REALLY thinking of taking the plung and getting a 17 caliber barrel made for my Encore. I am thinking of a semi-long range handgun barrel. Length I am thinking about is between 16 to 18", I will probably go longer so I can also use the barrel as a carbine. What I would like imput on is barrel length, choosing between a 17 Ackley Bee and a 17 Mach IV, and shooting mid weight bullets. Thanks.

I have a Contender pistol chamberd in 17 Mach IV by Bullberry that is 17 inches long. I have to say this combination is SWEET. I am able to drive 20 gr V-maxs just under 4000 fps with 17 grains of H4198 and group three shots at .75 inches. The accuracy is fantastic as well, my 20 gr V-max load going 3600 fps gave me three 3-shot groups that averaged .36 inches at 100 yds. These groups were shot with a 7x pistol scope so I am sure I induced some of that error. At longer ranges I have been impressed as well. I have several groups at 200 yds that are under 1" and a couple 300 yd groups that were just over 3". Again these were fired using thr 7x scope so I KNOW I was a major part of the problem. At 300 yds the reticle covered almost all of my aiming point. FYI I have also found a great low velocity load using 5 gr of Blue Dot that will group five 25 gr Hornady HPs at .8 inches at 2050 fps. I am currently planning to put a stock on the Contender and a 32x target scope to see how accurate the thing really is. Either way the Mach IV is good to go in the pistol length barrel. Please ask away if you want any more info. Semper Fi

Does anyone know if a case holder for the Wilson Case Trimmer is available in 17AH? I have not been able to see this caliber listed.

Thanks I'll give them a call. This is the next project after my 19 Calhoon. I have the barrel now just to get it installed.

Dane, I shoot a 19 Calhoon also. Is yours done?? If not, you may want to pick up a Wilson holder from Calhoon. You'd think the 17 Ackley Hornet would work on the 19, but the shoulder diameter is a few thou different. Just a heads up. Dan C

The 19 Calhoon barrel is resting on my bench. Hopefully this weekend I can get it over to a Gunsmith that will install it on the Ruger. I have the 19 Calhoon holder on order expecting it any day. I'm looking forward to getting the 19 set up.

I am shooting a custom Sako in a 17 Mach IV in which I built. I am shooting the 20 gr. VMAX bullets into a nice neet .3" group. The velocity is reading 4350 fps over my Oler 33. Is anyone else getting this kind of results? I don't have any bolt lift problems and pressures seem to be ok. It is on the upper end but safe. SD is 12 on the crono for 5 shots. In this end of the country there dosent seem to be many Mach IV's so...just courious.

I am using 20 grains of H322 and a 20gr. VMAX MOLY bullet. It is safe in my rifle but I would not suggest someone try it with out sneeking up on it. It is on the upper end and cannot be increased. The case life is excellent 15 handloads per case so far.

BEWARE of 322 loads when the weather is cool. When you shoot the same load in the summer the pressure will be off the chart, that's why many guy's won't use it in a case like the MK IV where 1,2 tenths can make a BIG difference in CUP pressure. IT is one of the most temp sensitive powders compared to Vitovouri which is one of the least sensitive, cleaner too.

Thanks, I have already been down the road of primers falling out because of temperature changes, and 17's are the worst for this. The H322 is in an Extreem powder, and so far no problems.

I work loads for a .223 in the winter and shoot them at PD's in the summer and I haven't had any problems either.FWIW

The .223 is not a Mach IV, 10-15 degrees can bump velocities up 100-150fps in that case with H322.
