I'm new to 17 cal. ballgame, although I do already reload for my 22-250 and 7 mm TCU. I've have been browsing the different shooting websites, trying find more information about reloading for the 17M4. My question is: When working up new loads for small capacity casings like the 17M4, should I work up in increments of .3gr or smaller? Should I anneal my casings before fireforming? |

ON the Mach IV case and similar size .17 cases, here is what I have done. I load up in .3 grain increments until I get closer to what others have reported as Max loads (and also what is published in load manuals). Then I will back off to .1 or .2 grain increments if I am really trying to push the speed. If I have found a good shooting load that is less than reported max, I stop right there and go hunting/shooting. With some guns, I have found top accuracy at max pressures, while others have been most accurate at light loads. I am not willing to sacrifice accuracy in the name of screamin speed. As for annealing the Mach IV cases, I would suggest that it wouldn't be necessary. The cases are near perfect when formed in the dies and won't have to stretch/form much to fit the chamber upon ignition. Annealing never hurts when considering what you had to do to squeeze the neck down from .224" to .172", but I don't suspect that your case life or accuracy will suffer. |

Could you email me any info/recomendations on .17 hornet?
I've got a Charles Daly 22 hornet on the way and I'm thinking I'd like to make it a 17 to use on foxes and bobcats next season cause I'd like something more powerful than a rimfire but still as quiete as possible. Do you sell copies of your fox hunting video? What are some good varmint/pedator hunting magazines or news letters to subscribe to? Thanks

paul i realy havn't thought about selling copys of the video. i don't know if its professional enough. i guess i should ask jim and john for their opinion . have some one who knows what they are doing chamber the daly for you. here are some of the problems you may encounter 1.threads are a wierd metric , you need to make shure the gunsmith knows this. 2 use a minimum spec reamer as hornet brass i.e. undersized from the factory. 3 the under sized chamber may require a special set of dies i.e. smaller than usual or custom. i belive lee will make a set for about 50.00. if this hasn't scared you off call ray montgomery in grand junction co. (970-434-6162)or wessinger custom guns at(803-345-5677). i would strongly recomend you go back to home click on links and go to varmint al home page read his fireforming method.
as far as magazines try the varmint hunter mag.605-224-6665 or predator extreme(205-380-1299),varmint master (205-988-9708) someday i'm going to learn where the cap lock is on this darn thing.

Bob
Thanks for all the info and contact numbers. If you mean your video is not professional because it may not contain titles credits music and lame jokes that would just save me from using fast forward as much. If it showes several foxes coming in and being shot/shot at I'd be willing to pay for a copy. I was going to have my local dealer order a charles daly action for 299.00 but he said it would be june before i got it. While making up my mind to have him order it and wait or just give a couple of hundred more for a ruger I ran accross a daly rifle at gunsamerica that said new in box for 289.00 plus 15.00 s/h so I ordered it. I thought it would be a great deal but not if it requires a good deal more expense to convert. I have a .22mag but from reading on the net it seems the 17 ah would be more reliable at dropping foxes and bobcats in place at 75 yds and not as load as .223. I was thinking if I placed the speaker at 50 to 75 yards it would be easier to conceal my wheelchair/atv and if I can drop a predator close to the speaker it would be easier to recover without going for assistance. I dont mind hunting with a partner but sometimes I just like to hunt alone. And as you can see I would want to make a rifle as light as possible and still be able to hit something at a reasonable distance. Well i've rattled on enough. Again, thanks for your reply. |

i havn't forgot you or your questions. contact jd and see if he will forward the video to you. having been confined to a wheel chair for several month myself in the mid 1990 i realize what a tough task you are partaking in. but it sounds as though you have it figured out.

I AM THINKING OF BUILDING A SET OF MATCHING SINGLE SHOT FALLING BLOCK ACTION RIFLES AND CAN'T DECIDE WHICH ACTION. THEY WILL BE CHAMBERED FOR TODD'S NEW CLASSIC SERIES OF CARTRIDGES.I DON'T REALLY LIKE THE RUGERS AND HATE TO SPEND A FORTUNE ON CUSTOM ACTIONS. WHAT CHOICES DO I HAVE TO CHOOSE FROM THAT I MIGHT NOT BE FAMILIAR WITH. THANKS FOR ANY HELP. |

I am working with a Winchester low wall originally chambered for the 22 Hornet, I also have a model 44 1/2 Stevens in 222 Mag. Either of these would be good or you might get a Matini action. There aren't a lot of choices without spending BIG dollars. You will run into the problem of having to make extractors for rimless cases with most older single shot actions. Good luck, Marcos |
