Does anyone have any loads with this powder that shoot good with 40gr v-max moly coated bullets? What kind of velocity? OAL? Did it shoot group?
Thanks in advance MB |

The best powder by far is Varget it makes the 22-250 live and breath. It is temp. insensitive and give great velocity with wonderful accuracy. I would use the Benchmark in smaller cases.
I have a 22-250 AI and it will push a 40 gr. to over 4500 fps. There is one other powder which will give just a little more velocity but it is not temp insensitive and thats R15. It will push the 40 gr. to 4600 fps. and these are safe in my rifle with no bolt lift problems. Your friend, Chucker. |

The powder you know as Benchmark, is one of a pair of powders, made in Australia by ADI (who also make Varget, as AR2208). You get BM2 (Benchmark 2). BM1 is even faster. In the ADI loading guide, BM2 loads for the 22/250 are given, but in no case does the velocity attained beat that produced by 2208. So, I'd just stick with Varget/2208. BM2 works wonderfully in 223 with rounds around 45-55 grains, and is roughly equivalent to BM1 when using 40's. |

The 17 Baker Max uses a .357 Maximum case necked down for a .172 bullet. The velocitiy and ballistic performance is about the same as a 17 Mach IV. The brass is plenty strong but it is a pain to form the stuff from what I hear. You have to anneal the cases to keep from splitting them. The cartridge is not very popular because identical results can be had with much easier formed brass like the 17 Mach IV. Bullberry is one barrel maker that offers chamberings for it. Hope that helps. |

Thanks Amos
I was thanking it would do a little better then the Mark 4 because of the rim on the case. But your telling me it`s the same as the 17-357 Max right! Its just aggrevation not to be able to get to that 4000fps mark because the primer blow out. And I was thanking the max case may do it.(thats with 25gr.bullets) bortons@erinet.com |

Even more similar to the .17 Jet which is much easier to form as well. For those looking for a rimmed case with similar case capacity to the Mach IV - the jet is a good choice. |

17/222 Imp results so far | ![]() | ||

Hi guys Thought you might like to know how I have been going with the 17/222 Imp. I have taken the rifle to the range twice now and fired a total of 41 shots. Initially I worked up some load data and chronographed loads, then this weekend I tried some of the loads for group. Load data so far:
Conditions were fairly good for group shooting, though I could never get all 5 shots away with the same wind direction/velocity. The Vmax groups were very poor, over an inch. I then tried the 30gn Bergers and got an immediate improvement, with my best group in the low .4’s. The 25gn Hornady HP also showed a lot of promise, with one group shot and measuring in the high .4’s. I have some pictures of groups which I will post once I find a good picture hosting site. I will weigh a case to get capacity in grains of water for the 17/222 Imp. If anyone can tell me water capacity for the 17 Mach IV and the 17 Rem I’d like to know for comparative purposes. I’ll let you know more as I go along. Fergus |

I am thinking about a pd gun in that caliber of yours.Have thought alot about a 17VarTarg Turbo also,I'll be interested to see if Todd ever offers dies for it some day.He surely must be busy with the 17Tac right now.For me the 17ppc is my ocassional long range dog gun,but I want(need)a high volume pd popper that can do 400yd shots with ease all day.Maybe a 17Javelina would make some more sense but I sure like the looks of your cartridge Fergus.By the way where is the reamer now?LOL

I come up with an average of 28.4 gr water for the .17 rem using rem factory cases. I don't have a mk4 to check. |

27.1 grns of water.I filled the cases all the way to the top of the neck.Its more or less for comparing the different cases relative to each other.I hope this helps a little.

Jim, I tried to post this as a reply to my post but I don't see where I showed up. If this is in more than one place, please forgive me. For my Mach IV, I ended up with a 25 grain Starke Red Prairie bullet and 18.4 grains of Accurate 2460. Shooting over my chronograph I had a low of 3799 fps and a high of 3780 fps with the majority of shots [(1) 3 shot string and (1) 5 shot string] running around 3830 fps. Groups were around 3/4" (I did not measure them), but considering the conditions, I was pleased. All my 1st 17 project has done for me is make me want to do another one. |
