well i got my ruger 218 bee back from ray montgomery slightly shorter than when i sent it to him. 5 inches to be exact, 37 in over all with the front sight back in place. took it by the local gun shop hang out, ray did such a good job even the local experts couldn't tell it had been shortened. fex ex broke the butt stock in two and ray repaired it at no charge, you have to look real hard to find the break. when i get settled with fed ex i will send it to ruger for a new stock. to sum it up it has been love at first sight.
went to the range to sight in and here are the results.12.5 l gun 36 starke 7.5 rp 3287 fps

Sounds like it still shoots good. I would have never taken the chance to shorten the gun the way it was shooting before hand. Sounds like it worked out for you, you have the short #1 that you wanted and it still shoots well.

nice to see a post where they're not bashing the #1 for accuracy. I been looking for one myself but sorta got spooked. Very interesting project foxhunterbubba!

brian i have owned over a dozen ruger #1 rifles, the odds of them shooting are jist as good as any other rifle. for a while i thought my 218 bee had gone nuts on me but it turned out to be a verry loose front scope mount. now its back down to those little tight droups again. i went shooting jackrabits with it shots out to 250 yds were quite consistant. just so you know all my #1b's were more accurate than the varmint version. i had a 1v in 22 ppc which was ok .50 to .60 but my 22-250 in 1b would shoot .25 to .35 at 100 yds.boyh had single set canjar triggers in them. good shooting

Hi All, I just got a .17REM model 700BDL and would like some info on this gun. Would one of you happen to know what the factory twist is on this barrel? Also I got some Berger 37grn VLD bullets will these work OK in this gun. And last what is a good load powder & primer for the .17REM. Thanks in advance, Marcos

rem rate of twist is one in nine
37 gr probably won't stabalize
try IMR 4320, accurate arms 2700, winchester 760 or vitavouri

1-9 twist is the remington factory barrel twist. It won't stabilize the 37 grain bullets - you would need a faster twist barrel to stabilize them. You can shoot up to 30 grain bullets in the factory gun. Most people shoot 25 grain bullets and load data for them is readily available. I recommend that you call Clint Starke and get some 25 grain bullets to try. You may get some of his 30 grain bullets as well to try at some point since the .17 rem and 30 grain bullets are a good match. As far as powder choices, Foxhunterbubba has suggested a few favorites. Both of my .17 Remingtons liked IMR4320 and it is generally considered the best powder to start with in the .17 Remington. Let the fun begin.

Hit the range this morning and finished fireforming some cases. This time I tried both the 27 and 36 grain bullets, using cheap Accurate 2200 powder. Past experience with this stuff has shown best accuracy with top-end loads. This powder screams in the 19.......I reached over 3600 fps with the 36 gr bullet with seemingly mild pressures, and the 27 went 4150 fps. This bullet is too light IMO, giving up too much BC. Better to use the 32 or 36. The weather was much better this time. I generally shoot 3 shot groups during initial load testing and velocity/pressure work, and did so today. The largest group measured exactly .500". Looking good so far! Regards,
Dan C
