Guys Took the 17/222 Imp out to the range this weekend and was very impressed with the performance. I shot 2 five shot groups at 200 yards, one a horizontal string of 1” and the other a horizontal string of 1.5”, with virtually no vertical in either group. Given the scope power of 15x and the wind conditions, I was very happy with the results. I’m sure I could get both my 100 & 200 yard group sizes down if I used a BR scope on the rifle. Now, one possible problem. I shot two groups with the 25gn Hornady HP, but each group only shows 4 shots on paper. Try as I might, I cant see a 5th shot hiding in another shot. I am running the Hornady 25’s at something less that 3900 fps in a brand new Shilen barrel. Surely I can be pushing them too hard and blowing them up before they reach the target? Any suggestions? Both pictures are actual size, 5 shot 17/222 Imp groups at 100 yards, shot over flags in light, but switching winds. Top group is 30gn Berger MEF and Varget powder, bottom group is 25gn Hornady and H322 powder. Fergus

Those groups look impressive. I like the top group with those 3 in one hole. Have you had a chance to use any 30 grain Starkes? Of course, if it aint broke don't fix it. I never had much luck with the Varget in my .17 rem. |

Jim No I have not tried any Stark bullets, though I hear good things about them. I am just using what is locally available at present (I live in Australia). I would like to try some Starkes and I believe he will export. I also like that group shot with the 30gn bullets. I think the rifle will shoot them very well and if I shot true BR style with a high magnification scope and some sighter shots, I’m sure I could get some nice bug holes with both the 25gn and 30gn bullets. Marlin .17HMR range testing | ![]()

Took out the Marlin yesterday to the range to sight it in and see what it was capable of at 100 yards. I haven't measured the groups yet but will do so soon. I shot 12 groups so I should be able to get a good average. Under the conditions that I was shooting in, I felt good about the results. It was a bit windy but I put up a couple of wind flags. I found it very difficult to get off the shot when the condition was right because of the "lawyer-proof" trigger. I will have to get scale on it to see just how heavy it is, but I'll estimate it at over 8 lbs. The other thing that I had to deal with was a 3-9 power scope which was the only one that I could fit on the gun with the standard rings. I'll likely leave this scope on the gun because it is a good fit. I'll definitely have to do something with this trigger - any ideas? |

Jim
The Malin triggers are not that difficult to work on. But you doo have to use a good "stone" as the surfaces are fairly small. Between polishing and doing a spring swap I got the trigger on my Glenfeild 25 (same trigger from what I've been told) down to a crisp 15 oz. This is a bit light to hunt with but I use it for a "bench" gun only. |

Measured my targets last night. 12 group average - 1.01" at 100 yards. Smallest group at .5" and largest at 1.3". All of this with a 9 power scope and a HEAVY trigger. I had a couple of wind flags up and the wind was switchy. Gonna have to work on the trigger a little and am sure that it will help the groups. |

Jim, Just a note of what I've found so far with this round. It has taken about 100rds to get the barrel to settle down/break-in. I initially was getting groups like yours but, now they're down to a consistent 1/2-3/4" @ 100yds. Apparently this caliber is extremely sensitive to any imperfections/machining marks, and takes a few boxes of ammo for the barrel to begin delivering it's full accuracy potential. For the trigger, pop over to the Marlin Talk website and do a search. I believe Andrew posted the instructions there. Hope this helps... |

Jim, Hmmm...Okay. For the trigger on the Marlin's it'll take about 10 min to get cleaned up and manageable. The first thing to check on these triggers is the machine screw that goes through the trigger. Sometimes the people at Marlin get a little over zealous in the application of torque. Sometimes this will cause the trigger to bind, and once loosened and then just snugly tightened, the trigger will be fine. In most cases though a stone is required (a fine india will be all you'll need). Just take the trigger off and polish/stone off any burrs or machining marks, being careful not to alter the geometry of any corners. 99% of the time this is all that is required for a trigger job on a Marlin. You should be able to get it down to a crisp and light 2lbs (if not less). If you totally screw up, a new trigger runs..what...$8? The beauty of the Marlin design, LOL! Word to the wise, DO NOT CHANGE OUT SPRINGS. If done correctly, you'll never need to swap out springs. Hope this helps (let me know how it turns out...) MarinePMI |

"DO NOT CHANGE OUT SPRINGS. If done correctly, you'll never need to swap out springs" Too late it is already done. I can't imagine that you'd get it down to a reasonable level with those mamoth stiff springs in there. I think that My Jeep coil springs are less stiff. Anyhow, I changed both the sear spring and the trigger return spring with lighter ones. I also stoned the mating surfaces of the sear and trigger. The result is great and should prove much better to shoot as well. I don't have a trigger scale but can tell you that it is somewhere around 2 - 3 lbs. I would guess that it is closer to 2 lbs. Not much creep either. Overall a huge improvement to the gun. I look forward to shooting it again like this, and I'll bet that the groups are smaller. |

Jim: If you pop me an E-mail I can send you the "canned" treatise I prepared on Marlin Triggers. Springs can be changed out but they need to be of the same diameter, but using a lighter gage of wire to work correctly. Also, and you probably know this, NEVER replace that tiny spring at the rear of the Marlin sear. this is the one that bears up against the receiver near the tang. This springs' job is to assure positve sear engagement with the striker and has no bearing as far as making a good trigger. I have two SSV's that are at 2# and crisp as glass. I made an overtravel stop for my own and man! what a difference that made. Regards, Andrew (marlinmanssv@hotmail.com) |

What is the max usable range for 17 cal? | ![]() | ![]()

I am talking mainly about one of the bigger 17 cals like the VLR , 17 PPC, or 17 BR? Is it feasible to make a 500 yard rifle using one of the cartridges? TIA |

Well, kinda depends on what sort of target you're talking about. The new high BC bullets like the 29 and 30 gr. boat tails really help the 17 retain energy at longer ranges. But, I don't know if I'd try coyotes at 500 yards. Prairie dogs and western jacks??? Heck yeah!!! 500 yards is absolutely within reason. Look at it this way, if you can do it with a conventional twist 22-250 or 220 Swift, you can surely do it with a big 17 and good bullets.........As long as your energy requirements are met for the target in question. Let me put in my 2 cents worth. What are you shooting at? How big is the target?
A 30gr bullet goes subsonic at about 750 yards. Given good conditions anything inside that range is fair game (milk jugs)etc. 600 yards for PD should be possible provided an accurate rifle, good optics, good spotter and conditions. Corbin |

Have shot pd's at 500 yds. and beyond with several different setups, including 17rem.[30 gr.],17ppc[37vld],22250[80&90],various 6br's,[55-105],6mmack,257ack,and many others up to 7stw and 308 baer. Have made consistent hits on pd's at 500-720 yd. with both 17rem and 17ppc,as a matter of fact the ppc is one of my most accurate rifles. Really the only disadvantage i see in using 17 under ideal conditions is being able to see bullet strike at distance.

Just started using it in a Tactical 20 and 25-06 barrels on
an Encore. Seems to work pretty good and was recommended by a guy who has been using it for years. The Tac20 barrel is stainless and cleans up with fewer patches than the steel 25-06 barrel. The olfactory senses find the smell repugnant, but I like it in every other way. Bullberry not only recommends it, but sends some of it along
