I've just decided to join the .17 brigade.
The gunsmith is setting to building me a .17 Mach IV, on a Sako L461 action, and using a Remington 17 barrel. It's really rather an experiment, as the barrel is a freebie (unfired take-off), and he's quite happy to convert to my original idea, .221 Fireball, if I'm unhappy with the mach IV. The rifle is intended to by used 'spotlighting', and for that reason will be built to a max length of 40 inches. This probably means that the barrel will be 20 inches long. Can anyone give me any idea of the noise levels associated with this round. Is it noisier/quieter than the .222. Is there much difference? What is the recoil level like. I know there isn't much, but is it possible to self spot with a 10x scope?

Mine is also a Sako L-461 Vixen with a Shilen 24" stainless varmint weight bbl. I normally shoot .223, .223AI on our OR ground squirrels, and have noticed an almost complete lack of recoil, meaning that I can self-spot all my shots. Report is noticeable less than the .223 class of cartridges, verified by fellow shooters nearby. I'd be surprised if you lost anything over 100 fps with the short 20" tube; still plenty of zip left for most any varmint target. I'm shooting H322 w/Berger 25gr HP in reformed Fireball cases, 7-1/2 Primer at 3,850 fps. Hope this helps.

I was able to spot my hits with my Rem 700 model .17 Rem. It took a little getting used to but I could do it as long as I had a decent rest. Off of the bipod worked for me fine. I am hoping that I'll still be able to do so with the Javelina while pushing 30 grain bullets. I assume that it won't be a problem. On my .17 Rem, I had a 4-12x scope. I think that you'll be able to spot your hits.

Just wished I'd had a 17 last night. Ran into two foxes whilst spotlighting on a farm in which we don't use our current centrefires (for noise reasons). Both were smart enough to stay outside of 22lr range, but were well within 200 metres.

You will enjoy the 17 Mach IV. The 17's require a good barrel so if the remington doesn't work out try a different barrel. I have a 461 in 222 Mag with a lilja barrel that is great. I also have a 17 Mach IV Cooper that is even better. The Mach IV is a great caliber for anyone interested in getting into the 17 world. You just have to like a little extra tinkering. If you don't enjoy loading them up as much as unloading them then it may not be for you. Love those small calibers.

Does anyone other than Hornady and Berger make 20 caliber
bullets? I have heard that there are a couple of custom bullet
manufacturers who make them but can't find out who or how to
contact them? Thanks.

and his sons have built a new outbuilding to do it full time.
In the past it was tough to get his bullets but we talked for 2
hour not long ago and I got the impression he was serious about starting up again. My desk is such a mess I can't find his number but he advertises in SCN and The Varmint hunter mag too.
Give him a call and let us know how it goes.

Clint Starke makes a very fine 20 grain bullet which happens to be my favorite. Also Hammett makes some that are near 20 grains. Budd Tanner makes a 22.5 grain bullet.

Clint told me about 6 months ago that he had no intention of getting into the .20 cal bullet making game. Of course, everthing is up for change but that is what he told me then.

That term carries a very negative connotation due to a recent infamous corrupt reprobate who was and remains a destructive force to our cherished American freedoms, none of which applies to Mr. Starke. Incidentally, in the last exchange that I had with Starke, he indicated that the 20 caliber market was too small and he had no intention of producing bullets in that caliber. A.E.

You noticed he did not come back to Arkansas when he left office. I have some good friends in NY and I'd hate to wish him upon them, our gain is their loss.

I am constantly amazed at how many of my fellow Arkansasans despise Bill Clinton (I do also) and yet he was elected Governor of this state so many times. How? Guess I just don't travel in "his" circles.

I always figured he had some computer programmers in his pocket that had rewritten the poll counting code..which gave him the results he wanted regardless of the actual vote. I know that Arkansas has a reputation for having a lot of uneducated people. But I will never admit that is is a fact that the majority are actually that stupid. Bill was always elected on the ignorance and apathy ticket though..funny how those same qualities can and will get you dead in firearm handling yet so few can see that similarity to the political situation.

Geez, can't believe where this has gone. Ask a question about
an innocent little bullet, and the subject matter gets twisted
around to mr. twister, Klinton. Will we ever get that bad taste
out of our mouths? Now he wants to go to the middle east to
"help". Had he done his job in the first place, we may very
well still have the twin towers -- Somalia was willing to hand
Sin Laden over to us on a silver platter, and Klinton turned
them down. Why can't that a__-hole just fade away into some
sewer muck somewhere?
