What kind of gun is it? Is that just the model 17V with a replacement stock? Looks good. Also what scope rings did you use to get that bigger scope on there? |

It's a Marlin Model 25MN, with a prototype switch barrel kit. It has barrels for both the .22WMR (1-14" twist) and the .17HMR (1-9" twist). The stock is from Richard's Microfit, and the scope rings are the BKL two piece mounts. The switch barrel kit should be available for sale to the public in the near future. If you go to the web address for the photo minus the photo name, you'll see a description of it. And some people say Marlins are ugly! :-P LOL! MarinePMI |

I just saw those rings in the Sinclair catalog. I think that I'll give them a shot. How hard is it to switch barrels. I have seen that it is a pin that holds the barrel in place, how hard is it to remove. Seems like a nice gun, and the stock looks good. What kind of barrel is it - a custom barrel or one from Marlin...? |

Jim, Andrew has a neat little tool for removing the barrel as they are (as you mentioned) pinned and pressed. As far as switching barrels, it's a breeze...don't even have to loosen the stock screw. Just loosen a set screw, and twist the barrel off. Thread the other barrel on 'till it stops, retighten the setscrew. The barrels are from Green Mountain and are definite shooters! The .17 bbl is already settled into standard 1/2" groups @ 100 (if I don't screw it up). I sometimes wonder what the little bugger would do with a real benchrest and decent bags vice the sand filled shot bags I've been using... MarinePMI BTW, Check out "What's New" at the GMBCo website... |

hello, I have a 25MN with the factory laminate stock. I was wondering how you bedded it. Did you just full lenth bed it or put a pressure pad out front? Thanks and nice piece you built! |

If you have one of the newer 25MN's it should have the hole (drilled and tapped) for a second receiver bedding screw. It's a 10/32 machine screw (I forget the exact length). It will replace the front wood screw in the trigger guard. Just drill a hole in the stock to allow the screw to pass thru. Then just bed the receiver upto about a full inch in front of the recoil lug. Generally just float everything beyond that. If you wander over to the Marlin Firearms website there's a BBS (Marlin Talk) where guys can answer your questions that pertain specifically Marlins. |

I have not taken any turkeys with my 17 rem, but I would say you could easily take one's head off with a 25 g starke with 24g of 4320 underneith. A body shot would probably be ok, if it were a straight on chest shot , but there would surely be a soft ball sized exit out the back. see ya |

Model 57's standard stocks, had only left hands at the moment, more in 2-3 weeks. I think they were $10-$1100 range. Decent wood as is the norm with Cooper. Very nice though.

I am in the Marine Corps and am about to get stationed in Monterey, CA (tough duty I know!). Does anyone have an idea of a place to hunt ground squirrels etc. near that area?? Any drive under 3 hours for a hunt would be no sweat at all. Any ideas where to go or who to contact would be great. Thanks |

USMCpanzer, Post your question here www.jesseshuntingpage.com It's a hunting BBS that is made up of mostly Southern California hunters. Quite a few of them however are from around Monterey, at least that latitude of the state. Hope this helps some, Semper Fi... MarinePMI |

New poster. Question on .223R cases in .17 Remington | ![]() | ||

Howdy all, I have been hanging around the GGVG board for a few years now. Just found out about this board, and have reviewed about all the historical messages. They are VERY informative, and I commend the boardmaster and members for an outstanding job. I am waiting for my ''new'' used .17 Remington to arrive in the big brown truck. I am a volume prairie dog shooter and got the .17 Remington as a new toy because of its low recoil, reduced noise, and ability to shoot many rounds without overheating the barrel. (I shoot until the targets are gone, irrespective to the supposed damage to the barrel. I can always purchase another barrel, but cannot re-purchase the time I spend in the field with my wife.) I have a beginner question about the use of .223R cases in .17 Remington I have many thousands of FA, WIN, and REM commercial .223R cases on hand from The Brassman. Can I full length resize them to .17 Remington and use them with NO outside neck reduction. I have a 22-250AI40* with a small neck. I really did not enjoy reducing the necks, but I had to. if the reduction from 223to 117cal is too much, I would rather get some new unfired factory .17 Remington cases and need to get them on order now. I will post additional questions as they come up. Thanks in advance for your time and patience, Happy trails, Jumper aka Barry ross

.17 Remington brass is pretty cheap so that is likely the best way to go. I believe 223 cases would be too short to use in the .17 Remington since the .17 Remington is based on the 222 Remington Magnum case. |

Welcome to the board. You will likely heat the barrel just like most varmint cartridges if you shoot fast. The smaller .17's like the hornet are much better for the rapid fire.
