I got it and got it bad. 17 Fever that is. I really dont have the first clue about any of the 17 cartridges, but I know you guys do. I need help in deciding which cartridge to choose. There is no hurry as I wont be buying until later this fall after I save up some doe. I've read some about all the 17's in the article section but I'd like your opinions. Kinda leaning towards the MachIV. I'd like something in the speed of light catagory, but would settle for 4200fps. I also like the Encore, would I be able to get one in the MachIV? What is the longest barrel and a good twist rate for this or any other of the 17's you can get for the Encore? Really the Encore will not be the deciding factor and I dont know what will be until I do a lot more research. I'm going to get all the back issues of Small Cal News, but if you have any links of any info at all please post them for me. I've never done any case forming, but I'm not afraid to learn. Well its 4:30am and I'm running late for work so you all have a great day as thats what I'm gonna do. TGIF. Good Shooting, OD |

Get a 9 twist barrel chambered in .17 Rem. It will do more than the mach IV and without all the problems. Corbin |

The .17 remington may suit your needs a little better. You will likely not reach 4200 fps with the Mach IV even with 20 grain bullets. There is nothing wrong with starting out with a .17 Rem, although it isn't as much "fun" as working with a wildcat. The .17 Rem is a very versatile cartridge and can do a lot of things. As far as the Encore goes, it is a good choice. You can get other barrels as you want to try other .17's - at a fraction of the cost as a new rifle. For almost all of the .17's, I feel that the contender is a better choice. It is smaller and lighter and handles very nicely.

The best bet if you don't want a custom rifle is to go the 17 Rem. route. I think Sako still chambers one.(nice!)
If you want to go the custom route I am very fond of my 17 Mach IV it is a one of a kind that I built. Its on a short Sako with a heavy Shilen 1x10 at 24". It will push a 20 gr. Molyed VMAX safely at 4350 with H322. I still have a match grade reamer for it if you what some help in building it. It fills a warm spot in my heart. 17's Rule! Your friend, Chucker. |

If your varmint of choice is pd's the mach1v makes a great high volume shooter, its not really hard to load for,its actually lots of fun.If you will be shooting coyotes, chucks and crows once in a while the 17Rem is easy to load up a few and go.Whatever you do don't save up your money and buy a Cooper Varminter in 17 Mach1V as you will love it and want many more. You are turning onto a great page of your life, enjoy it!

I started with a 17 9 years ago by buying a used rifle from gunlist. It was a 17 ackley hornet that came with dies and brass.
It also had some load data worked up.This was the perfect way for me to break into the 17 world. Be prepared these things are like light sabers.I shoot alot of jack rabbits in orchards during the summer in california. You can actually see a vapor trail from this gun in the heavy hot air. My rifle shoots 20 gr berger MEF's.Squirrels and rabbits are done.More than a few coyotes have stopped breathing at the site of this gun. Good Luck gunnut gunnut |

It has done great for me with 25's as I have a 10 twist barrel,
the 30's do ok. But in your 9 twist I think that bullet powder combo will really shine. My notes say that 19.0 did the best with the 25's,for the 30's I would start at 18.0 and work up 2 tenths of a grain at a time, you will be pleased. Regards Matt |

Hi Phil. H322 and start about 17gr. As you know I like this stuff just go carefully. I kind of like the lighter bullets. I am using my rifle for 300 yds and under. I have stuff to reach out there if I need to. Speed rules. Shorten the flight time and they will not drift as much. Keep your powder dry.
Your friend, Chucker. |
