I picked up a Ruger 77/17 about a month ago, but things have been too busy (work, four kids, and honey do's) or the weather has been too crappy to get out and shoot it much. Right after I bought it I mounted a Tasco MAG 3-10x44 AO scope and grabbed the only box of shells I was able to find and headed to the range. I was centered on paper within a few shots, but beings ammo was limited I only fired two five shot groups. At 75 yards I was able to keep all five shots touching. My friend bought a Marlin 17V the same day I got my Ruger. He planned on mounting the same scope as mine, but the rings Marlin supplied are too low to mount a scope with anything larger than about a 38mm objective. He ended up mounting a Bushnell 3x9x32mm scope. At 75 yards his rifle put four shots into basically the same hole with the fifth just touching. Since then I've found a pretty steady supply of ammo, just need to find the time to get out and shoot it some more. I know there has to be few more of you guys out there that have .17HMR's and I'd like to hear about your experiences in the field or on the range up to this point. Seems a few people are still questioning the reason for the existence of this cartridge and are questioning it's success. It seems to me it's already a huge success because the rifles and ammo sure don't stay on the shelves very long. I don't see this cartridge as replacing the .22 mag, I see it simply another "tool" in the shed, and a mighty fun one at that. Fast, quiet, and accurate, in my opinion it doesn't get much better. Buster,
I won't be buying a .17HMR (I don't like any of the guns it is available in and I already have a .17 Mach IV, a .17 Remington, several .22lr firearms, a couple of .22WMRs, three .223s, two .22-250s, well, you get the idea). If and when Remington and Ruger chamber their semi-autos for this round (or someone makes aftermarket barrels for them), the cartridge might REALLY take off! The success of the .17HMR from a marketing standpoint is UNDENIABLE. Gun buyers seem to have gone nuts over this round (like they did over the Winchester Short Magnums a few months ago, and the Remington UltraMags before that). Many people want to buy the "latest, greatest" gun or cartridge, which is normal in this consumer society. The gun rags live off advertising, and have a vested interest in getting you to buy the new toys so the manufacturers will keep advertising. You've never read a bad review in a gun rag, have you? Whether the .17HMR is a success in the field remains to be seen. I see it as a niche cartridge; perfect for ground squirrels, and close-in varmints in suburban areas. I hope that more ammo manufacturers tool up for the round, both to drive price down and so it doesn't go the way of the 5mmRem. Enjoy!

The 17 HMR is a fun caliber and effective on California ground squirrels. Check the link below. Good Hunting from Varmint Al ![]() Related link: Field Report on the 17 HMR |

I took mine out two weekends ago and it performed very well in the field. Actually, better than I expected it to. At 50yds it gives the somersalt effect on Belding ground squirrels, as well as putting rabbits down with authority. Any hit in the chest just dropped them like a sack of potatoes. One disclaimer though, this is not a meat friendly round (for cottontails). Shots have to be precise, or there won't be anything left to eat... MarinePMI |
