Can 17 Mach IV casings be formed from 223 or 222? The neck thickness on 221FB casings are'nt very uniform and I was wondering if 223 Match brass was any better to form machIV casings. |

Phil,
You could, but the cases would have to be cut down (Dremel tool works nicely), and since the necks would now consist of what used to be the case body, you'd have to turn case necks down anyway. A fellow on a list I subscribe to uses .223 brass for his .300 Whisper, and he goes through this regimen. I just hopped on the .17 Mach IV bandwagon (LH Cooper Varminter), and I am going to turn the necks on my .221FB cases before I reduce them to .17. As a matter of fact, I did all my other case prep before necking down because it's easier to deal with a .224 case mouth than a .172 case mouth. George

It would be interesting to know how they come out. Drop me a line after you form the casings to let me know how it worked.
I just recently started loading for the 17 M4. I had Sharpshooter Supply install a Douglas 17 M4 barrel on my Savage 12 BVSS-S and I now have the barrel broken in. I'm thinking the casings need to neck turned to make the neck tension more consistant. I'm using Wilson inline dies, so its easier to control neck tension by changing bushings (.198 or .199). Well, I'm heading to the range on Friday, to see if the reduced neck tension helps. Good luck |

Sure can, but it's pretty labor intensive. I use W-W 223 brass to make my M4's, mostly to make the necks longer to better fit the chamber. To do it properly, you need a 223 to 221 form set, then run them through a Mach IV form set. Annealing is recommended, and neck turning is required........You end up with perfect brass, but I wouldn't want to make 1000 of them!! Dan |

Thank you much. My shooting year has been slow so far. Shot 21x's and dropped a point at the first match of the year (for me anyhow). The winner only had 16x's and I ended up with a 4th. Last time out I only shot 16x's but stayed clean. Didn't place too well. My back surgery laid me up for a bit which made me miss the last of the winter league group matches and the first 2 score matches. With the states next weekend, we'll see how the .30BR does at 200 yards for the first time. Glad you liked the article, nice intro you gave me in April. |
