my second 17AH is coming together(traded first one 19 hours after it was finished). I just ordered a Redding die set. I have about 800 22 Hnt brass in shop. I have put in order for a cleaning rod. I am going to Montana (just north of Livingston) for the 3rd time to go gopher 'killin'. What am I forgetting? Oh yah,,I also oredered a tin of Imperial Size Wax with Redding's name on the can.
I will be loading all the brass and taking most as 'fireforming'loads on the gopher trip to hunt with as I am fireforming. I'm thinking just order a 10 box pack of Hornady 20 grain V max bulllets,,,anything else I need while in the 'Virtual 17AH Grocery store'? thanks,,,,May 30th will be here soon. I have some 1680 so that's probably what will be loaded....alan in ga.

Bore guide? small patches. Sounds like a good time. The .17 hornet that I had shot fantastic while fireforming with 1680 behind the 20 grain Starkes. I wouldn't have hesitated a minute to use those loads for hunting. I can't recall how much 1680 I was using for fireforming.

Hey Allen, throw a bottle of N120 in the box when you go to the range to work up a load. Thermos of coffee's a good ideal as well. Maybe some 18 grain Bergers too. If you arn't going to molly you might want to pick up two cleaning rods, one for brush and one for the jag. And yeah, don't forget your notebook and chronograph. Can't work up a load without either of those. Heck while you are at it throw some SP primers and some Lil Gun. Sounds like a long morning. Might want to take a couple of candy bars for energy!

That is some set-up. I would love to have a private range close by. I have to drive 40 minutes to the nearest "decent" range and it is gonna close in June due to development.

I sent Brook's a private email about his setup. There is a guy on GGVG that has a 300 yard range with wind meters all the way out hooked up to a computer to monitor wind, temp and I believe humidity. Talking about ranges, There is only one public range in central Arkansas that is run by G&F. Lots of Federal money to help with it. Pistol on one side and 100/200 yard ranges on the other. Well they got some more money to landscape and build a new building for range master. Well, are they going to do the work in the dead of winter? No, how about during the middle of summer? Yep. Although the range itself is not involved the updating. They are going to close it down for at least 3 months, but hope to have it ready for deer season for those guys to sight in their rifles once a year whether they need it or not. "Life is Good"(sic)

in Ohi. 100 and 200 yards. Seems like everytime I go there they have the rifle range closed do to the archery course in the woods. My boss bought some land about a 40 minute drive away. Gonna make a shooting bench and set something up down there. Wont be anyone down there to bother me. OD

Hey Alan. Funny, I'm heading to MT on the 16th to shoot gophers with Calhoon! I'll try to leave you some.. If you remember, I had a CZ 527 with a Remington 17 barrel also.....mine LOVED the V-Max with 12.2 of 1680 for fireforming. I formed all my brass on prairie dogs, which is as it should be. This load shot under 1/2" consistently, at 3700 fps. Your lot of 1680 could be considerably different than mine though...........After forming I switch to N-120 powder. I still feel that you should use the proper form die. I'll be glad to loan you mine if you wish. I just formed some up last night so won't need it for a while. You are not going to believe what the 17 AH does to ground squirrels. It is completely unreasonable! It's the most fun you can have with 12 grains of powder! Mail me......... Dan C

but THANKS for the offer. This friend said no way to do case forming without form die. Other friends say easy(?) I also bought my first tin of Imperial Sizing Wax after years of wanting some of this stuff---Wowsers it's great goo! I hope to find out first hand on the gophers (Richardson Ground squirrels I think) what the lil BB's in bullet form will do. Got my CZ 527 Hornet today and am hoping barrel ain't 'welded'(kidding,,but tight!) on like some have been' Got my converted barrel ready-all but the threads and extractor relief. Friend has metric capable lathe and we just did the other 17AH last week. Should be fresh in our minds! thanks, alan in ga.

and most of us know any time we use a 'take off' it's risky. I am doing the machining so it's no deal if it doesn't perform. Got it from another poster and the throat looks new. It has a burr in the crown,,,which is GOOD,,because it is good reason barrel might not have shot in 17 Rem form. It is now polished, breech cut off, contoured at breech to 0.995", and will put a purty lil' crown job on muzzle after all is said and done. The crown is the fun part to me,,,,kind of a way of making your own design. Different crowns can make the whole rifle look different when viewed from the front. Also, my Rem 17 barrel is early stainless sporter w/9" twist. I'll report how it shoots next week I hope.
