Something I thought I would pass along. I have been forming 17AH using 6gr. of Unique powder. Prime the case and put the powder in along with a little tissue paper to hold the powder in the case so it dosent fall out. Get a plastic bucket and place some damp carpet inside for sound supression. Put a hole in the top of the lid and place the muzzle of the rifle into the bucket, it's not very noisey and the cases come out looking great. Save the bullets, just doing my part for conservation.
Just my 2 cents. Chucker. |

I used this method for forming 17 Jet cases. For the Jet, I actually used 8 grains of Unique. As you said a nice case is formed. I used a filler as well, corn meal to be exact with the tissue wad on top. I think that most folks are having such good accuracy with the fireform loads in the hornet - that they don't feel that they are wasting anything by shooting them. I have seen remarkable accuracy while fireforming most all of my cartridges - I don't feel like I am sacrificing anything by hunting/shooting with fireform loads. Other than decreased velocity, there may be little disadvantage. |

17 Remington with 17 grain Vmax test. | ![]() | ![]() | |

Hello
I did an unusual bit of load design today. I reclaimed some of the 17 grain Vmax bullets from the HMR rounds, and used them in my 17 Remmy. OAL=2.150" New case, prepped primer pocket. Benchmark and Varget were used, two of my favorites. Rem 7 1/2 primer. Rifle was a Tikka 595 Master Continental, 26" barrel, 1:10 twist. I tried several loads, 24.5 Varget gave me a .429" group. No hi pressure signs, and all standard workup procedure applies. Now I have NO IDEA how fast I was launching them, but the Hodgdon manual said that Varget charge will throw a 25 grainer to 4123 fps. I saw no signs of fragmentation. No sign of anything bad happening. Just nice clean holes I know a lot of the guys on this board have the various "insect" 17's. Maybe you will like this bullet. Even if acquisition is a bit clumsy. Hell, I think all should try a few. BTW: Dan C. I lost your email addy. :( Shoot again. JManes2021@aol.com |

Tackdriver: Great report. If Hornady ever catches up with the rimfire production, maybe they'll offer the little 17-grainer. By the way, did you by any chance measure the powder charge in the rimfire? I understand they use Lil Gun from Hodgens. I wondered what kind of charge they are putting in that little case. |

Hello
Yes, I have heard that they use Lil Gun in the rimfire round as well. No, I did not measure it. But it is not a full case by any means. Still some room in there. |

How tough was it to extract the bullets from the 17 HRM case? Did it deform the bullet at all?
Find out what the velocity is, it might be very fast. I know the VMAX bullets will stand a lot of velocity, cause I have had the 45 gr. 22 cal VMAX at a velocity of 4600 fps. and they will stay together. Chucker. |

Hello
It is not hard at all to get the bullets out of the 17 Rimfire case. Here is what you do. Take something flat, like a piece of plywood or brass, about 1" square or round, and lay it on top of your shellholder in your press. This is so the rimfire round has something to sit on. Now you need a 17 Rem seating die, I used the Hornady one. Install it in your press such that it is over adjusted, so that running the rimfire round into the die will force the bullet back into the case. Gently run the rimfire round into the seating die, you will feel the bullet contact the seating stem, a slow and gentle force from here will pop that red-tipped beauty back into the case. Drain the powder out around the bullet.
The bullet drops out into your hand. It will be in good shape, except for the ring left by the factory when the crimp was applied.
