does anyone have a set of 17 pee wee dies for sale? i have a pair of cooper stainless steel .647 at the muzzle 17ccm barrels and a itch for a 17 pee wee. thought i would use a cz 527 as a base to start. i already tried a 30 carbine case in the 222 magazine. i will probably have to start with the 22 hornet, switch the barrel and magizine and flute the barrel. thanks

Hey Bob, your plan sounds good. I know a fellow that built a 19 Carbine on the 527 Hornet action. The bolt face worked without modification, and swapping to a 222 magazine, also without mods, completed the conversion. I have thought about the exact same thing you're doing, so let me know how it works out. Midsouth list RCBS dies for the PW. Dan C |

I also know a guy who has a Ruger 77 Hornet action running the 19 Carbine round. The thing even FEEDS THROUGH THE MAG! Yep, the mag was reworked to actually work with the carbine case. Food for thought. Dan C |

dan, thats realy good news as i had talked to a gunsmith friend about modefying a ruger 77 for the 17 pee wee . how did the guns shoot? i alwas thought ruger missed the ball by not chambering this round and making it a factory round, he could have even called it the 17 ruger. who modefied the magazine for him. what a plinker for small game that would bee with a 25 gr bullit travling at 3800 fps with only 13-14 gr of powder. |

Bob, I saw a target from the 19 Carbine round out of the Ruger 77, and it would make anyone proud. The owner's name is Michael Marks of Montana. James Leahy of James Calhoon did the actual mods to the magazine, he said it was somewhat of a bitch. But Michael says it feeds really slick now. He shoots huge numbers of gophers with that rig....... Maybe James would discuss the magazine mods with you, but the important thing is that it can be done. I thought briefly about doing a CZ527 in the 19 Carbine, but instead drew up my 19 FBI. It's a much easier case to make and just made more sense to me. But the Ruger Hornet action using a Carbine case does sound like an appealing little package. James Calhoon can be reached at 406-395-4079. Dan C |

3800 FPS not realistic in a 17 PeeWee...Been shooting one since 1963, and 35-3600 more realistic with 10.5 grs 4227. Best accuracy is 3400 Fps, which is 10.0 grs 4227. My conversion is the Carbine action with a 20" bbl 9.5" twist. P.O. Ackley made the dies that I have. Need any info ...be glad to share.. Benny Rhoads |

benny i took the velocity from po ackley hand book for reloaders he shows 10.5 gr 2400 at 3789 with 25 grs and 3847 with 20 grs. i don't know what he used for a barrel length he was using. i plan to use a 21-22 in. have you found that the pee wee is less prone to case seperation than the hornet? does the brass seem to be stronger and more consistant? so many question ans such slow typing fingers. sami showa a max pressure of 40000 for the 30 carbine and 43000 for the hornet,is this due to cartridge strenth or the actions used for each? thanks bob |

Bob, I have had no case seperation on the Pee Wee. I do have to trim the cases after a few reloadings, then things seem to settle down and stretching is minimal. I tried using the military brass, because in the mid to late 60's it was less than 1 cent per round in quantities....but it was hard to work. I went to the civilian brass (Winchester), in the early 70's, and was way better off for doing it. I'm not sure what the average pressure is but I can tell you that I shed a jacket in the barrel about 6" from the muzzle and fired another round on top of it not knowing what had taken place. The barrel swelled up like you wouldn't believe, and the lone locking lug on the carbine bolt cracked. When I found out about the cracked bold lug, it made me shiver and cringe. so I guess the pressure at that time, was very high. Anything over about 10.5 Gr. of 4227, I start seeing evidence of excessive pressure, such as bolt face impression on the case head, and some primer pocket swelling. I have settled on 10.Gr 4227, and have had good success for the last 20 to 25 years with it. I don't have my log book with me now, but I did try 2400, but can't give you the results (Velocity) right now. I'm using a 20" bbl now replaced by Bob Schutz of Schutzen gun works in Olypia Washington (Olypia Arms). He said that he had never seen a rifle barrel swell up like that one...I have quite a bit of data on the Pee Wee that I could E-Mail when I go back to the Farm this week. Sorry that I have never owned a Hornet,so can't comment on the Hornet Wildcat .17. Let me know if you want any other info.... Benny Rhoads

benny i will get back to you for more load data when and if i complete the project.thanks for all the infoon the 17 pee wee it has to be a realy neat cartridge. i have a friend in colorodo springs co by the name of rich strausner who builds 50 ca bolt guns for military snipers. one day at the range he closed the bolt while standing behind the rifle (a 50bmg) the gun went off sheering the lugs off the bolt and went thru his right side.yes he's still with us just slightly rearanged.

H-335 loads for new ''used'' .17 Remington Savage | ![]()

What has your' alls experience been with H-335 powder in the .17 Remington?? Preciate some load data with 20, 25, and 30 grain bullets. I have a new to me ''used'' .17 Remington. It is a blued Savage short action with a low mileage 22 in Sharp Shooter Supply barrel. Since we are the ''retired homeless'' and live fulltime in a 40' fifth wheel, our storage space is critical. Therefore, I have large amounts of a few powders. I really don’t want to add another powder for my .17 Remington, irrespective of how good another choice might be. I prefer ball powder metering. I shot H-335 exclusively in my .223Rs --- it flows like water in my RCBS powder measures. Thanks in advance, Happy trails, Barry aka Jumper |

17 Mach IV and Vit. N133 | ![]() | ![]()

I have finally joined the sub caliber league. I just picked up a Cooper Varminter in the Mach IV. Wow - what a shooter! I now see what I have been missing out on. This board has been a great source of information from which to help my decision on which caliber. I am working up loads with 20 gr. V-max bullets. I started with 17.0 grs.and am currently at 18.2 grs. of Vit N133 with no signs of pressure. Can any of you Mach IV'ers suggest the top end data with N133 as well as velocities you are getting. I just don't want to go over and push the limits. Also, what bullet seating depth do the Coopers seem to like? Thanks,

Hey Matt, What primers are you using? What does your Cooper like for seating (Off the lands or up in the lands)? I finally have a windless night to shoot, so i will see what kind of groups I can get with Vit N133 and the V-Max's. I will try the Benchmark soon to compare. Thanks for the helpful info! Phil |

I have used a 35P and they are certainly the one that others are compared to. I don't own one of them. I have 2 of the Chrony's that I use and haven't had any problems with them picking up the .17 cal bullets. I haven't had any complaints with them either. They are compact and easy to carry to the range. I use the chrony to check my velocities to see what they are or if I am working on a project where I need to report the velocities. I will part with one of my chrony's for 60 bucks plus shipping. It has been used once and will come with the box. |
