2 tenths of a grain can equal 100 fps in velocity so dont take any 1/2 grain jumps near the top. the top powders are imr4320 aa 2700, aa2520 and ww760,short list there are others. bob

Be prepared to trim cases to length after 2 firings. The .17 Remington is a fine cartridge, but it will grow. No big deal, just make sure you keep an eye on case length. Get some Starke bullets, 25 grainers. Get some IMR 4320 powder. Shoot small groups and plenty of critters.

I have 25 & 30 grain Bergers. The powders I have on hand are: Varget, H4895, H4350, VV130, VV133, Benchmark, RL15 and RL19.

Not sure which of your powders would be best but some folks here are having good success with the Varget. Not sure of the Reloder powder, am not familiar with the speed of the 12 and 15. The 4895 and 133 are probably a little fast for the case and you would not be able to fill the case. I believe that the Hogdon site lists data on their website for Varget and other Hogdon powders.

Will 30 grainers in a 17 Rem be too heavy for a 1:10 twist? |

I shoot 30gr in my 17 M4 and it has a 1-9 twist, don't think you have any problems.

I am looking for information on .10 caliber wildcats. I have tried calling Bill Eichelberger with no luck, and sent him a letter today. I would like velocities of 10,12,or 14 Darts or any info on .10 stuff. Who makes barrels, bullets, and dies. Any problems with fouling or barrel wear. I would like to find a .10 wildcat in the 3500-3700 fps range, maybe a little faster.
I got a subscription to small caliber news, no magazines yet.

I believe that Jeff Lawrence is the maker of the small bore barrels that Bill uses as well as other "small" caliber shooters. He can be contacted at (406)883-9324. He advertises that he does .12 caliber and up Rifle barrels, but he may do the .10's as well. IF not, I'll be that he knows who does.

Hi all
This is my first post in this forum but not my first visit. I come here regularly to drool over the storys I read.
I finaly decided it was time to go one step further and buy my first 17 rifle. I chose the remington BDL as once the barrels seen better days I could put a Border custom barrel on. Living in Scotland as I do, I never hear of many people with 17 calibre rifles, in fact when I got it on my ticket, I was told by the police I was only the second person in Lothian & Borders Police force to have a 17 calibre. Being that I am a registered firearms dealer I got my new remmy at trade price which is still a lot more than you guys pay in the states at retail prices.
My rifle arrived three days ago, all I can do is look at it for now, as I am finding it so hard to obtain the esential things to get me up and running, I have 20g V Max in stock for my own use. Brass is a big problem so far not one of my wholesalers has any in stock, I have the option of buying 100 loaded rounds from the remington importer at $120 which I thought was expensive for buying at trade prices.
Could I buy Lapua brass in 223 and neck them down and work on the necks, if so who does the dies could neck the 223's down to 17. Which is the best cleaning rods and other accessories to get me up and running. I would like to put a synthetic stock on the remmy, any sugestions, Please bare with me on this guys I am learning as I go along and would apreciate any input to get me up and running. A big thankyou in advance

Ian, Congrats!!! If you can wait a month or so, I can pick up some brass here and meet you somewhere over there to give it to you. I'll be in East Anglia (Norwich) on the first of July, for a duration of about three months. Andrew (who posts here, mostly on the 5mm Craig) has a friend who is also in need of supplies (it may even be you for all I know) and I've offered to do the same for his friend. In my mind there's no sense in you guys getting price gouged, when I can get most of the stuff here, and pack in my check-in baggage for the trip accross the pond. Let me know... mantww@aol.com

I have formed alot of 17 rem out of .223 brass of any flavor, but the brass comes out about 25 thousandths shorter than regular brass. This does not bother me because I shoot as a predator hunter, and I am not as concerned about the 27 thou. difference. You can get the doubled ended form die from Bullberry for $25 and form as much as you want. Also, let the fellow board member bring you some things when he comes your way. You will fall in love with the 17's they are way too much fun. Thanks.

If you can get Hornady bullets, you may want to try to get some of the 25 grain .17 cal Hollow Points as well. They will probably be a better bullet for your .17 Rem. IF not, you can certainly work with the v-maxes. You'll also need to get a bore guide and a cleaning rod. Those things can probably be bought and sent across the pond at a fair price. Not sure if bullets would be allowed to be shipped, but you would be well served to try to get some Bergers or Starkes, if possible. A special funnel is also required to fill the cases, since the regular sizes are too big at the mouth. RCBS makes one, as well as several custom shops. You can certainly improvise with something if needed.

Thankyou for the information you have all suppled. I have another question, my rifle is going to have a moderator fitted
I would like to reduce the barrel length to accomadade the moderator, does anyone have any info on doing this. standard barrel is 24", I would like to go down to 20" is this a possibility. the moderator is going to be the type that sleeves over the barrel with only 2" protruding by the barrel.
I can as a dealer get bullets sent to me, but the cost out ways the price of doing it. Better to buy from uk inporters at a greatly exagerated price (that sucks)

Dont shorten the barrel if you want to have the best velocities possible. The 17 rem is already close to max or overbore anyway, so any loss in barrel length will turn it in to a flame thrower and louder, kind of defeating the moderator up front I think. It needs the length to burn the powder.
The Proshot rod is my favorite. Ive had Boretech and Dewey. They bend and have no decent guarantee. Proshot is a small company and buyer friendly. You might even want to become a dealer for them...Mike in Fresno

Just curious, I had this problem with a 22.250 rifle before, was like a flame thrower burning most of the powder out of the barrel. It was easily cured, I used magnum primers and a faster burning powder, cured it, I wandered when you said it would be a flame thrower, havent you ever tryed doing what I did above.
I am using the 17 to dispatch fox at night on the lamp, losing some velocity would not be end of the world, reading up on it on the net, you would be surprised how little velocity is lost. the military sniper rifles and police tactical units now use rifles with 18 and 20 inch barrels in 7.62 calibre out to 600y
So I am thinking that it is feasible for the 17 to go down to 20". But I Have no experience what so ever with the 17 and came here to seek the advice from guys who have been, seen and done.
Therefore I can learn from there mistakes, which speeds up the learning process.
Funny thing is 2 days ago I held a pro shot cleaning rod in my hand it was stainless steel real quality. So a dealer about 50 miles from me got there before me. I will have to go buy 1 from him.
Thank you for the advice Mike. By the way I remember you from go go varmint board didnt you comunicate with John in Ca. ( I am sure it was you, do you work in law enforcement)

Thats the information I was hoping to see, Thankyou for taking the time to share it with us, You made me a happy shooter, The 17 remington BDL I bought is still in the box, I open it and look in every now and then.
Is there any special procedure that I should know of regards an out of the box rifle i.e do I have to degrease the barrel, clean it or anything else, sounds a stupid question but I have only ever had hand me down rifles this 17 is my first new rifle. Thanks in advance.

ian, thats not a stipid question , one could write a book on the subject. first clean everthing with a good cleaner such as hoppes #9. pay close attention to the bore, use a break in procedure such as dan lilja has on his website. shoot the gun for groups if it doesn't shoot well(3/4 of an inch) get back to us. work up your loads with care using a good strong primer such as a federal 205 or a 7 1/2 remington. go in 2 to 3 tenths incraments as 2 tenths of a grain can mean 100 fps in this cartridge. always keep your brass clean and check for split necks often , you will get some as the brass work hardens with time.
you won't find a better shooting out of the box factory gun anywhere enjoy it bob

As Mike indicates, shortening the barrel length will hurt the performance of the .17 Remington, but by how much. I have a 15" barrel on a contender and the velocities were 3700 fps rather than 4,000. You should be able to get some approximation of the difference. I'd say that you could probably get 3900 fps from a 20" barrel. I'd try to keep it at 21 - 22" if possible. The Remington Model 7's were chambered in .17 rem and had shorter barrels (21" I think). At 20" or longer, it won't be a flame thrower or terribly loud at that length. The 15" one that I have has a nice crack to it, but doesn't throw a flame nearly as much as my 10" 17 hornet did. It will be a matter of powder selection that will give you the best results in the shorter barrel.

Russ Haydon's Shooters Supply located in WA state. The phone number is (877)663-6249. They have Saunders' book listed in their add in the latest edition of Precision Shooting magazine. If that don't work, you can send snail mail directly to Dick Saunders, his address is: Saunders Gun and Machine Shop

Gotta tell ya, I got his book and it is so dated it doesn't show any powders in the last 10-15 years. No LilGun, no 680 or 1680 and no VIHTA VUORI.
Todd's is about the best going.

I understand what you are saying but I still appreciate it for the different calibers that it covers. AND, Dick provided the velocities of the loads, so you do get some very valuable information. Even if you have to use different powders. For the money, I really appreciate the offering. I am not suggesting that it should replace having a copy of Todd's Sensational Seventeens but it is a good supplement.

It won't size the whole length of the neck, but you don't need that anyway. I use a Redding type S bushing die for the 221 Fireball to neck size many different cartridges with a simple bushing and decapping rod change. Works great....... Dan C
