Tell us more. Where is that you are having the failures? Primer pockets opening? Necks splitting? Or something else. The problem is that if you try to extract all of the potential from the .17 Hornet, case life will be low. The answer to that problem is that hornet brass is dirt cheap and easy to form. I have heard that the Winchester brass is thicker/stronger than the Remington brass, but can't compare since I took the advice and only use Winchester Hornet brass. I also anneal the necks and don't try to hot-rod the 25 grain bullets. I shoot the 20 grain bullets at a pretty stiff load, time will tell how many firings I can get from the cases.

I had to back my 17 AH loads down quite a bit from the published data, I was getting cases stuck in the chamber after firing what I thought to be a mild load (12.0 gr 1680, 20 vmax). I think I have a tighter than usual chamber or barrel. Remember, a grain of powder in that tiny case is a large percentage, and slight variations in dimensions can change pressue levels real fast.
Also try Lil Gun powder, it works real well for me. There are some loads published in the summer 2001 edition of Small Caliber News. Good Luck.

Yep, we need more specifics on your problems. It should be no trouble to shoot little screamer groups with your Cooper. I have one batch of brass that has been fired in my Cooper 8 times with loads pushing 20 grains bullets over 3800 fps. I neck size only, and cases never get tight in the stiff little Cooper 38 action. That is good case life with the thin Hornet brass in my book. AA1680 is probably considered the 'standard' powder in the 17 AH, but I've had better luck with 2200 and particularly Vihtavuori N-120, my favorite. AA1680 varies quite a bit from lot to lot and a difference of 2 to 3 tenths of a grain is good for 100 fps! The last batch of 1680 I bought displayed velocity variations of over 100 fps in my 17 AH, not good. I used 2200 a couple of summers ago in a Ruger 77/22 17 AH, with the Hornady 20 Vmax, and was well satisfied. I settled on a load of 13.8 grains using WSR primers. It shot great and ran around 3750 fps. I was lucky enought to hit 3 prairie dogs out of 5 shots at 438 yards with this combo. Yes, the wind was light! Lets hear more about your troubles and see if we can help you out........ Dan C

12.5 gr of N120 in front of Fed 205 M's pushing 20 gr V-Max's useing either Rem or Win brass. I get 3800 fps. Shot a yote at 150 yrds, heart shot, ran 5 yrds and dropped. I neck size only and am on my 7th loading. LiL Gun is also good but I find it dirty.
Good luck
BrooksBy the way, my 17 Ack Hornet is also a Cooper and I shot another yote the next day with my 17 HeBee in a Cooper. Love them Coops
