17MachIV Powder/Load for 20 grainers

I've been able to find plenty of load data for 25 grain bullets in the 17MachIV, but none for 20 grainers. Is there a favorite powder that fills up the case better than N133 for velocities in the 3800fps range?

In my 17 m4 the best powders are H322,blue dot, H335 and IMR 4198, with H322 being the best.

17.5 gr H322, fed 205m , with 20 gr v-max was the best for me. that is the same charge I use for 25 gr starkes.

for my hunting load its 10 gr blue dot,fed 205m,25 gr starke. That load is also the same one I shoot in my 17 rem, awesome fox load in either rifle.

I have used H322, H4198, VV N130, and VV N133, mostly for 25 grainers. H322 seems to work fine except that it tends to burn dirty. H4198 performs well too, but doesn't meter in the measure as well. I have not experimented with reduced loads in the 17M4 yet. My reason for experimenting with 20 grainers is to prevent pelt damage on fox and bobcat while still getting quick kills. I don't want to slow them down too much, just to around 3800 or so, but that seems to leave lots of space in the case. Any experience with 20 grainers on furbearers?

I havn't shot any fox with the 20 gr bullets just yet,and not sure I will. I am really loving this 10 gr bd load with the 25 gr starkes, it is super accurate in both of my rigs and still plenty flat for me. as for pelt damage it is great , havn't done any sewing yet.

I can only get the v max's to shoot worth a damn at speeds around 3900 fps and up. I tried them in the slower reduced loads but they do this funky hook thing on me.

as for the metering problems with the different powders, I never notice it. I have a wierd little way of loading that works great for me. I fl resize and prime my brass 100 or so at a time, then when I need ammo
I just use a 1/4 tsp, kitchen measuring spoon and dip out of a 1/4 cup, kitchen measuring cup. I only load 20 or so at a time and measure every charge for my 17's so it goes really quick, havn't touched my powder thrower or trickler in probably six monthes. it takes me about 15 or 20 mins to charge and seat bullets on 30 cases. works for me , but its wierd ,... I know.

What velocity does your 10gr BlueDot fox hunting load give you? Just wondering how slow the 25 grain Starke can go and still kill reliably. Also, how is the loading density with the BlueDot? Or does having lots of empty space in the case even matter with it? Thanks.

on the 10 gr bd load, Red feather chronoed them recently at 3070 fps or right around there, the 20gr bullets were right around 3300 fps if I remember correctly.

In the mach iv that 10 gr charge fills the case nicely, the bd is pretty bulky. I shoot the same thing in the 17 rem with no problem.

I have hit two jumbo Alaska fox with the BD and starke load and they have performed perfectly on both. no exits and both went down instantly without even twitching. everyone says that old 17 cal saying "like they were struck by lightning" well that about says it.

On the last one I did find some fragments laying against the hide that were about the size of #8 bird shot, that was a head on chest shot so I would say the are totally fragmenting even at the slower speeds, great bullets.

I have 6 different boxes of 17 cal bullets that are collecting dust now, I can't get any of them to shoot as well as those 25 gr starkes.
