My post in this thread has links to some threads with pics.

Here is an old pic from about 1996 that I scanned on my printer. The No.3 in the front has the original 22" barrel with No.1B wood. The second No.3 has a 27" barrel and the No.1 with the Unertl scope has a 24" barrel.

I like the long forends to get the bipod as far forward as possible, makes it easier to hold steady.
A 22" barrel should work fine with the 20VT case.
I go for the long barrels since I shoot from a bench most of the time.

Dave, thanks for the reply. I joined the forum, don't know why it labels me as a visitor.
I can't find the picture that I had seen of your rifles, and have a question. I like a compact rifle, and was thinking if I got a 20VT it would be in a 22" barrel. Do you think it should be longer. If 22' is OK,then it seems that the Ruger would have to be a model with the shorter fore end. If it had the long one, the barrel would not stick out far past the fore end, and it seems like it would not look good.
Do you remember the post name that had pictures of your rifles

    Benny,
I've never bought off Gunbroker, got mine at gunshops, gunshows or trades. Prices seem to run from about 600 to 900 depending on condition, caliber, wood. If your donor rifle was a .223 you wouldn't have to change extractor. .22 Hornet and .218 Bee would probably work also. Most barrels are a little over $300. I got my last barrel from The Barrel Man. He has a deal with Shilen and sells them for about $230 for stainless match.

Some gunsmiths will thread and chamber for about $200. Mark Penrod charges about $400 but he is really good with Rugers.
If you've looked at my posts, you seen how I do the scope bases.
This is the first visitor message I've had, I hope it gets back to you.

I sure like the looks of your Ruger No. 1's and think that I would like to have one in 20 Vartarg. I am old fashioned, like exhibition wood, rust blue, precision work, although I can't afford it. So it seems like my best option is to buy a Ruger with nice wood, and have a stainless barrel installed like yours. There are some Rugers on Gunbroker with nice wood, but I don't know what is a reasonable price. There are 2 in .270, one is $849, buy now $850, and one is $500 with a reserve, but pictures are not good.
I live in Tn. mountains, just want an accurate gun. There is not much long range varmint shooting here, probably just punch holes in paper most of the time, maybe a crow sometimes.
If I get a Ruger, it would need a new extractor, and a barrel by a skilled smith. can you tell me how much this would cost, I want a fat stainless like yours with straight taper at the start for scope mounting. your advice would be appreciated.
