221 fireball to 17 fireball
 

I have a bag of new 221 fireball remington brass on its way. I'm wondering if I have to neck turn and anneal after forming to 17 fireball? I have other brass to use but got this bag in an unexpected deal so trying to make the best out of it.

Just run it through the die and you should be good - do it all the time for 20VT and never annealed.

Going from 22 down to 17 in one step is alot, I would do it in 2. When you get one necked down to 17 load a bullet and measure what the neck dia is that will tell you if you need to turn or not.

I have a 20 vartarg die would it be good to run it in first the. Then to 17 fireball? Lube inside neck I assume between dies

Good advice above. I suspect that whether you need to neck turn depends on your 17FB chamber dimensions.
My 20VT chamber is .234", and I neck 221fb to 20vt and don't need to neck turn.

I am assuming your 17 Fireball is not a bushing die, you could probably run them through your 20VT but its gonna bump the shoulders back more than necessary. If I remember correctly a 20VT is 1.6 to the shoulder and fireball is longer.

Use a Redding Redding 17 Mach 1V form die #1
Then straight into your 17 Fireball full length die

For my rifle 20 VT there is no need to neck turn BUT I have to for the 17.

I run mine down in two steps, some times three,
20 vartarg, then into >17 fireball, seating die then full length,
if I go from vartarg to full length I always seam to have at least one neck crush for 50 brass.
I don't need to neck size, likely depends on your chamber,

Might be good run a couple and check.
IF any problems crop up, anneal a couple and try those.
Make sure you use enough but, not too much sizing wax.
I've never had a problem this way.
Except enlarging the 7mm and .300 U/M brass to .358".
Split quite a few until I annealed them.
Going down, should be no problem.
It WILL thicken the neck walls though, once you get a case made the
right size, stick a bullet in one and measure it. That way you should know for sure.

I just ran a 100 pieces of once fired as 20 Vt right through the Hornaday 17 FB FL Sizer set to the proper headspace for my Mach 4. Loaded them up and shot them. Should probally be neck turned but I have done 300 now and get by.
