Cooper 20 VT Model 21 Varminter - Question

Cooper .20 VT Model 21 Varminter

I saw this in a local gun shop today and almost bought it. In fact it has been put away for a couple of days for me.

I know Cooper makes good rifles, but I know really about them. This model 21 has a beaver tail stock, single shot, 1-10 twist and 24" SS tapered barrel. Everything looks really good. I just don't know anything about these rifles.

Is there anything I should be aware of or look for in particular?

Is the Cooper model 21 a decent rifle for varminting?

She's asking $1,550.00

Thanks for the information.

I personally own three Coopers 20VT rifles, two Model 21 and one Model 38. All shoot very well. I sure you will be happy with that Cooper Rifle.

Buy it, I love both of mine.

I have 5 Coopers now and have owned others. Every one have been shooters.

If it is in good shape you will be very happy. I have a couple m 21's in 204 and 1 in 223 and hitting golf balls at 200 yds was boring. If by chance the barrel is shot out Cooper will rebarrel it for about $400.

Terrible gun! PM me the phone number of the gun shop and I'll have them dispose of it so you'll never have to see it again. :D

I have three: M38 in 22H, and M21 in 221FB and 223. Great rifles. Get it. All mine shoot <0.5MOA.

I would buy it.....

I had one and have really enjoyed it on Montana prairie dogs,542 yards is my best shot with it.So much fun when I heard of another with French wood I bought it too.You will not be disappointed at all and if by chance it doesn’t shoot,Cooper will do a great job rebarreling it like Varmintshooter mentioned.

You shouldn't buy it. That would only be starting a bad habit of buying more Coopers. My FIL has multiple 21s in varying calibers. Nice guns. You won't be disappointed with the gun, just the future cost of more Coopers.

I have a cooper M38 in 22 Hornet and it needed work to meet my expectations. The extractor and ejector looked like they were made by hand with a dremel and a bench grinder. They were very sloppy and didn't work very well. I eventually remade these pieces myself and they work much better now.

The extraction cam is a radiused cut on the back of the receiver and the smaller radius on the root of the bolt handle sort of hits this and sort of helps pull the case out of the chamber. It's not great. I eventually welded a blob on the bolt handle and ground it back to shape so that it isn't so sloppy.

So these are some things I would look at. In my opinion, a rifle in this price range should not have these issues. I bought mine new from a dealer, and when I called cooper about it they were not helpful at all. It is very accurate with nice wood, and with my repairs it works well now.
