22 Hornet loads with Lil Gun and MP 300

Hey,

I have my brass and dies set-up to load some 40 grain polymer tipped bullets in my 22 Hornet. What charge are you guys using? I loaded up 12.0, 12.5, and 13.0 grains of Lil gun and it looks like 13.0 grains is compressed and 12.5 may be lightly compressed. Is this your experience too? I used a long drop tube to help.

What velocities are you getting with your 22 Hornet and Lil gun and MP 300? If you could list your charge weight too, that would be greatly appreciated.

Be very careful with the loads you are doing, as they are right up at max. I would be more concerned with pressure spikes and enlarged primer pockets.

Hornet loads

I use win brass, Fed small pistol primers and 40 grain Berger bullets. I use 13.2 grains of LilGun, which is a full case. I’ve loaded and shot 1000s of these at PDs, with very good results. My hornet rifles are Anschutz.

Bill,

Which loading manual are you using? Hodgdon shows a max of 13.0 grains with a 40 grain bullet at a pressure of 28.400 cup. SAAMI shows a maximum for the 22 Hornet at 43,000 cup.

Is your load a compressed charge? Is it ok to compress Lil Gun?

Hornady's load data, which show 13.0 as max. That is correct, but remember that is in their test barrel and temps can sure make that load unsafe in a lot of off the street firearms.
That is why they give a start load and tell you to work up slow and carefully.

My full length sized Winchester Hornet case is filled just barley below the mouth at 13.1 grains of Lil'gun. So yes a compressed load. The pressure data I've seen shows Lil'Gun at the lower level of the various different powders listed. The maximums seem to range from 12 to 13+ grains. At 13+ the case simply runs out of capacity. I've shot Lil'Gun since it arrived and feed 7 Hornets without any issues and this includes case life. Some people have had unpleasant experiences with it but I'm happy.

Yes, the maximum load from Lil Gun still has less pressure than the starting loads of H4198, H4227, and H110 according to Hodgdon's website. I wonder what people have done to have a negative experience with it.

Read around on some forums and you will find, some have, for a unk reason hit a pressure spike and blew primers, enlarged the primer pocket or even damaged their firearm.
It could be caused by a temperature change, different lot of powder, often it can not be pinned down as too why, it just occurs. Lil gun can be touchy. Bill K :)

I have no experience with pressure spikes when using Lil'Gun. What follows is only a WAG. The temperatures I see in Montana are maybe mid 50's early morning to maybe somewhat over 100*. No issues here. My cartridge over all length is set by the Ruger Magazine. I'm not set up to be just off the lands or even up into them. I dont know if the shorter LOA has kept me out of trouble or not. I haven't had problems and that makes them hard to diagnose.
