Prairie Dog - bullet recommendations (6.5mm/.264)
I know the prairie dog doesn't hold stature as "big game", but some of us REALLY enjoy them (for shooting, not for eating)!
My friends and I really like the Vmax line for these rascals, however the only Vmax in 6.5mm is a 95 grainer. I suspect that will be a long jump to the lands in a 6.5 Creedmoor, so I'm looking for other options with great expansion characteristics - for terminal impact and to avoid ricochet problems! Have any of you folks experimented with bullets like AMAX or SST (or others) on prairie dogs?? If you don't mind sharing your results, it would be GREATLY appreciated! thanks, Stretch |
I've seen 6.5mm 140gr amax open up PD's pretty darn good at 500 yards. That was fired out of a 6.5-06 specialty pistol, so probably similar speeds to what a rifle in 6.5 creedmoor would generate.

I missed a mule deer twice at 325 once with my 7-08. Kinda torqued me off as he ran over the knoll. An unsuspecting PD was standing there at 200. I took the opportunity to check my zero. That 140 ballistic tip sure made a mess of him! Don't count out the lighter "big game" poly tips. A 120 grain-ish would probably work good.

Don't have a 6.5 but Speer makes a 6.5 TNT, Sierra has 2 sub 100g varmint bullets, and Hornady has a light vmax.

Thanks !!
That's exactly the type of first hand information I was hoping to learn from. Our prairie dog spots are about a 14 hour drive from home, so it's challenging logistically to check these things out firsthand. The land owner where we hunt elk likes us to also help keep the prairie dog populations under control. We try to help out. Lots of times on the way home, we are asking ourselves if we just had an elk hunt with prairie dogs on the side, or maybe it was a prairie dog shoot, with an elk hunt on the side... but a LOT of fun and good times! Thanks again! Stretch |
I remember that day Aaron

The term turned inside out was made apparent that day with the 140A-Max I first thought the 140 was a bit much for pds,but it sure worked well on them. Matt |
That was a fun day wasn't it Matt?
