Guys, Just finished this one up. It's a 20/250 set-up to shoot the 55 gr Bergers.

Great looking rig. Would be nice to know what it does at 500 yards plus!!!

It's a little surprising you're getting that kind of results shooting the 55's out of a 1-10tw. Curious, what elevation are you shooting from? I'm going to guess you're a few thousand feet above sea level which could help explain why that 1-10 is working for you but maybe not.

I have a 20-250 build it the works right now that will be finishing up a little after the first of the year but I went with a 1-8tw Krieger to be safe at all elevations.

Have you considered trying any RL16? I think RL16 will yield a little better velocity and be more temp stable than RL15.

Agreed, these 20-250's are not going to be long with barrel life that is for sure which is why, shortly, after I had my gunsmith order the first barrel, I had him go ahead and get another one on order.

Guys, Just finished this one up. It's a 20/250 set-up to shoot the 55 gr Bergers. It is a rare RFD precision action RBLP, Jewell trigger, Kreiger 1:10 twist, McMillan (pillar bedded). I shot it today...(9) break-in shots cleaning after each shot...then a three shot group (picture attached). Velocity averaged 3775 fps (right in the area I was looking for). I'm hoping this will be a long range PD and GS rifle beyond 700 yds. There was a thread a few weeks ago about barrel twist with the 55 gr Berger. "So far" it looks like the 10-twist Kreiger will work. I need to do more testing at longer ranges to see if these bullets stay stabilized at the longer ranges. It needs to warm up here though...pretty cool today LOL! 410gauge

I used to have 2 RFD's. Be careful with pressures because the bolt faces are soft causing them to peen in making the firing pin stick.

Bob Dodd still owes me $150 bucks which he refused to pay back, speaking of paybacks, lol.

Keep us posted how the bullets are holding together in about 300 rounds.

Looks like a shooter, is the good news!

steve123, a very interesting comment about the bolt-face on the RFD. Opened up the bolt-face .003" to work the Lapua brass a little better. Could barely cut it with a carbide tool. Squealed like a pig. Seemed harder than the hubs of h--l! I've had a couple of light firing pin strikes. Changing primers to see if that helps. Only have (16) rds through it, so I'm kinda feeling my way along. Haven't seen any peening of the bolt-face so far. It's been a interesting project. As I'm sure you are well aware (having owned a couple of them)...it takes some pretty good concentration just to get the bolt into the receiver. A very smooth action in my opinion. Thanks for the info. 410gauge

Back then, It could be that the pressures that the 6x47l cases could handle caused the problem I had??? It's VERY!!! hard to tell when to stop putting more powder in because the primers were only slightly flat and no ejector smear/no ejector present, and bolt not sticky yet. Later on, when I bought a chrono, that load was 3250 fps/105gr out of a 29" barrel, so pretty high pressure.

When I wanted a repeater for tactical matches I sold them. I bought a M700 and had to back off pressure until I got Gre-tan to bush the bolt, then back to higher pressure with 115's at 3000 fps.

My load now is at 3172 fps in a 28" using a Mausingfield action. The Mausingfields have a super hard bolt head so I don't expect problems.

With 22-250 brass, the brass will let you know about pressure sooner than the x47L brass will so you'll probably be fine.

But that's interesting the RFD bolt was hard, maybe he used harder steel once he realized there was a problem, don't know.

Yes, other than that the RFD's were a nice action. Bob, not so much.

Nice to see RL15 worked for you Dave. Theres alot of debate about what twist for the 55"s you and I have spoke about it. My 9 works awesome. My personal feeling is a 9 is plenty for the big 20's if you need a faster twist for a slower 20 then a 39-40 would be a better fit because the velocity loss versus B.C gain is a wash or loss unless of course you just wanna do it. Anyway just my 2 cents.

Rl17

Beware of the pressures of RL17! It is a pretty good powder, but it's the most
temp sensitive of any I have tried. I had unbelievable velocity differences from
cool to hot temps in a lot larger capacity case, the .25-06.

I had a 20 dasher done last year with a 28 inch long 9 twist lilja. I've got the 55gn bergers at 3780 but read a disturbing post on a US site that the user had to back off to 3600fps after the pills started to disintegrate when his barrel got to 150 rounds

So I thought I might email berger

They recommended 3400fps as the max speed for the 55. I'm up to about 200 rounds.

Hope it keeps shooting

I shoot my 20-250AI , 8 tw, all the time around the 3770 area with 55 bergers and have never had one puff. It will shoot hotter loads, but the accuracy is best at this speed. It will keep them in a cigarette pack at 600 yds.

Longest kill so far, was tipping over a coyote at 631 yds with a chest shot... I still can't believe I hit him that far on the first shot...LOL.

I LOVE THIS CALIBER... LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT

Kinda like it too....LOL.
