Just wondering has the 204 ruger been Ackley Improve yet?
I have just wondering if the 204 has been turned into a Ackley Improve yet? Just about everything else has.

204 Ruger
Since most Ackley Imp. cases have 40 degree shoulders and minimum case body taper, the 204 Ruger with a 30 degree shoulder and minimal case body taper, I don't see what great advantage would be gained from going AI. Having said that, it has never stopped anyone, in the past, from trying it out.
Order the reamer, gauges & dies and have at it. |
Don't believe the 40 degree shoulder over the 30 on the 204 would make the effort worth it, for what little gain you might obtain. The case already has very little taper. Bill K :)

Agree with Bill. I've got experience with only five Ackley Improved calibers, and from what I've seen on the chrono, the cost vs. gain will not be worth the time or money trying to "improve" the 204 Ruger. I own four 204's (down from five), and improving the case would be the last thing I'd be thinking about.
As Bill said, order the reamer and have at it. You'll confirm what P.O. wrote in his two-volume book on the subject in regard to what cases are candidates for 'improving' (powder volume gains vs. velocity). Be sure to post your findings in both terms of performance and cost for the job. We all love to hear about this stuff. |
I didnt know the shoulder was 30 degree. No it wouldn't be worth the trouble.

Unless you are going to shoot the heavier bullets, most of the time, a 1/11 twist on the 20 calibers is the overall favorite.

P.O.'s mentioned that the two most improved cartridges were the 250 and the 30-30
I have had the Roberts and the 22-250 and as mentioned did not see that it was worth the effort Jim |
The best thing you can do is order the .204 match reamer, with the shorter freebore and a slightly tighter neck clearance. I don't remember who did the original, but It may have been Rick from Oregon? I got the reamer number years back and can't remember who I got it from? With this reamer you need to check distance to the lands. Factory 40 Vmax is only .010 off.

I believe Montdoug had Greg T. do the shorter free bore etc. His rifle was a hammer. Just need to put free bore on barrel in case you sell. Running factory 204 ammo will give higher pressures.
