Hornet Lube (?) Dents
 

In one batch of Remington 22 Hornet cases, I was unable to avoid dents on the shoulder, even after swabbing the die and wiping most of the lube off the case.

OK to ignore the dents and load the cases?

they should fireform out fine. I had this issue when I used to use a rcbs lube pad. now I use spray lube (was one shot now lanolin IPA mix)

may be a good idea to hose out the die with some brake clean to start fresh.

Check your die for a vent hole and clean thoroughly.

You well have a build up inside the die body, clean the inside good and as mentioned be sure the vent hole is also clear. Bill K :)

lube pads are notorious for applying too much lube. With the hornet, with such a soft shoulder, you are also applying it to the neck, which is not needed nor recommended.

I use STOS, Imperial Die Wax and most often now, Hornady's white tub of lube - on two fingers, applied sparingly to each or every other case as the case may be.

With the hornet, every other case is fine. I also only sized hornets far enough to hold a bullet ie: 1/4" of the case neck is more than necessary.

With one of my tightly chambered CZs, I didn't have to lube them at all.

The dents will iron out when fired, but if actually creases the case, not rounded dents, the creases will likely cause splits or cracks.

I only size about an 1/8th inch of the case neck. No lube at all. Never had an issue,but I use WW cases, which are pretty thin.

I don't think I'm generating much pressure, using 1680 powder, either, so I'm not overworking the cases at all.

I'm loading for a CZ, dunno if the chamber is tighter than any other rifle, it's the only Hornet I've loaded for.

I'm with Glenn, no lube. For my 22 Hornets (have 4). I only neck size about 80% of neck on rounds that have been fired in that rifle . No intentional 'lube', just use a small tin of No. 9 shot that is loaded with powdered graphite, and push the neck of the case into graphite coated shot. Other info, WW brass, Hornady Hornet specific NS die.

Harold, afwiw but I've made hundreds of 20 Mink cases from WW 22 Hornet brass and 17 HH brass. What still works the best for me is the Redding Imperial Sizing Die Wax. TK was selling a Resize Case Lube called Accuracy Case & Neck Lube. It was pretty good, but I ended back up with the Redding Imperial Wax product. I've never had problem with shoulder dents using it sparingly. 410gauge

It's amazing what dents will iron out when fired.
I've tested that at times with some I was sure would
never come out no matter what.
After seeing some of those, I don't worry about such
things now.
Just make sure the case mouth is good and the head
isn't about to break off.

Glenn, all Hornet brass is thin, however RP is the thinnest brass of all and the largest capacity as well - almost a full grain more than WW.
