Ballistic limits to velocity in a 17 Hornet

Hello all...

I ran across a South African chap claiming a very high muzzle velocity in a 17Hornet using a proprietary bullet from Perigrine.

I haven't the mathematical ability to determine just if this is even possible using any currently available powder

The numbers I ran for the best powder combination I could dream up say 74,500 PSI in a 17 Remington would possibly net out 4800fps in a 26 inch barrel...

The physics that I am aware of just doesn't allow an extra 1250fps to be gained by using any known loading combination of powder, primer, case or projectile.

He is using a Savage M25...

In a 17 Hornet ? I would politely say he is all wet. :)

What chronograph would see a 17 cal at that velocity?

That is another little fact, that would support being all wet. ;)

I don't know what that powder is he is using (brand wise) but could you get 21.0 grains in a 17 Hornet case, along with seating that bullet ?

I was surprised my magneto speed caught them at 4400 FPS.

What caliber 17 and what powder are you using for that FPS ?

That was a 17 Remington and CFE223. I was working with some loads, this was with book data, a bit off the top. This particular barrel seems to be “fast”.
I had a scale service check my scales at work, as I thought they may be off. They were fine. Use the same equipment for other cartridges weekly.
This barrel and chamber with a start load is usually pretty close to mid range speeds.

As far as the 17 Hornet goes, I am like others, sounds pretty questionable with that case and powders available.

Thanks that sound like what I came up with

That is what my "SNIFFOMETER" said immediately... "all wet".

Yes - if that BS was wet, it did!
