6x45 AI Seater Die

I will soon be embarking on a 6x45 AI build with a spare Rem 700 action I have in the safe. While assembling dummies to evaluate the optimum throat I would want, I made a disappointing discovery. I have a set of Redding Type S 223 AI 40* dies I was planning to use with my 6mm neck bushings and seater stem. Although the sizer die will clear the 6mm necks easily, the seating die will not. It ends up crushing the brass every time. What do you fellows that shoot 6x45 AI use for a seating system? I'm contemplating just drilling the constriction in my existing seater die to a slightly larger bore, but thought I would solicit advice here as a preliminary step.

I kept it simple and obtained a RCBS seating die. Works just fine. :)

I considered that and/or the Hornady, Lee, Redding, etc., but they are all 6x45. Does the 6x45 AI case fit into the seater or just a 6x45 case?

Have you considered just doing a 6TCU

I don't know , as I kept mine at 6x45 and no AI case to try and see. :)

Yes. Not looking for alternate calibre suggestions please.

I always thought a 6mm TCU and a 6x45 AI were identical. What are the differences?

The best thing is a Wilson 6mm seating die blank and have it chambered with the same reamer that cuts your chamber. You'll have accurate seating and easy seating depth adjustments. With an inexspensive little arbor press (or make your own) and eating depth adjustments at the range are a snap.

Good shootin'. -Al

Thank you Al. That's the kind of info I am seeking. Anyone else have options to share? Keep em coming please.

If you can get a 7mm carbide end mill it would probably bore out the hole in your seater to an adequate size, or send the die to Jim Carstensen in Iowa and he could probably bore it out but call to discuss first.
However, my thinking parallels Al's to use the chamber reamer to make a custom seater from a die blank. I have done this for many years with great success.
