22 hornet or 22 k hornet?

next year after i get done building my son's 7x57(custom 93 spanish mauser), i want to build a 1898 springfield armory(i have two actions without the bolts) in either a 22 hornet or 22 k hornet. i want it to shoot 40-50gr bullets with either jacketed or cast boolits. it will shoot out to 150-200 yards, but basically 50-100 yards is more likely. groundhogs, foxes, coyotes and targets of opportunity are the game. i'm guessing that a 1 in 14" rifling twist is the way to go? which do you choose, 22 hornet or 22 k hornet?
******************************

i'm just rambling on, its not needed from this point on:p

i've never shot a hornet(or k hornet) before. i have shot a 222 rem, 223 and 22-250 ai(owned them, sold them). i have a 20vt that i fell in luv with, but i don't have a 22 caliber anymore. long range varmints and targets aren't for me anymore. the longest shot that the 20vt ever did was 324 yards on a groundhog. the longest shot i ever took was 800 yards on a steel target groundhog with the 22-250 ai(75gr a max/h4350) with a 1 in 8" twist. (the longest shot i ever did was with m60 machine gun [7.62x51] at 1000(or was it 1200?) meters with a human torso plastic target, yes i was in US Army)

;)anyway, why am i using an 1898 spr armory action when i have better ones on the market? well, i like old actions and old cartridges. i like blued steel and wood. i have a 91, 93 , 95, 96 and 98 mausers, not to mention the 98 spr armory. i have a 30-40 krag and a 7.65x53 argentine and 7x57 and 8x57 and 9.3x57 and a few other ones. i had a 1972 win m94 in 30-30 that i gave it to JES Reboring and he did a 35/30-30 that shoots a 200gr fn gc with 2400/dacron that is lights out accurate. i have a 1973 ruger #1 in 270 win that just luvs a130gr nosler bt/imr4320 and a 140gr hornady sst/imr4350. well i had better stop rambling now.......

Go with the K hornet. Less loss of brass in the long run and you gain 50-100 FPS, plus they seem to be more accurate overall. :)

( Sounds like you have a nice collection of fine shooters, in some good and older calibers, which are always fun)

I have 2 of each. The K's are not rechambers they were Ks from the get go. Just me but I don't think I would do another K.

K or no K hornet

I’ve had both a K hornet and several standard 22 hornets. Still have two of the standard 22H. In my case, accuracy was essentially the same. I don’t know about case life, never wore either out.
I saw increased velocity with the K but not what was advertised. Both are very good 150 Yards or so varmint cartridges.
If it were me, I’d stick to the standard 22 hornet.

I own a hornet, never messed with a K hornet. I have talked to lots and lots of smiths in the past couple of years and some die hard gun guys in general. If you want accuracy out of that barrel I would go with a 1:10 twist or a 1:12. You can not spin a bullet too fast. If you went to a 1:10 you would open up using 55 grain cast bullets which would probably be an incredible accurate setup.

Had both, prefer the standard 22 H. Regular twist is 1:16 as you know. It shoots 40 and 50 grain bullets just fine. If I was custom ordering I would get it in .223 bore like the CZs are and maybe go 1:14 or even 1:12, but for sure not faster. Mine are actually all 1/16 and they work just fine. Mine will all move a 40 grain bullet at 3100 fps with Lil'Gun in WW cases. It will shoot under 1/2" at 200 yards so plenty accurate. The Ks are maybe 50-75 FPS faster and I see no improvement in accuracy. There is no point in having a 22 H and trying to shoot bullets heavier than 45 grains. If you want to shoot heavier get a 223.

The 22 H is a very accurate, very quiet round and is an excellent varmint, woodchuck and beaver round. It is also excellent for use with reduced loads using Trail Boss, almost no noise and even full power it is not a lot louder than a 22 RF or 22 Mag. so great for built up areas. Use it the way it is intended, if you want to hot rod a round this isn't the one to do it to.

Excellent advice, IMO......

If you need more speed, the Hornet case is a poor place to look for it in quantities that will make a real difference. In addition, the K-version offers nothing extraordinary in case life over the standard Hornet due to the thin design of the Hornet case itself. As mentioned above, the Hornet case is not the place to start if you are looking for more velocity. Get a bigger and stronger case if more velocity is required.

I own several 22 Hornet rifles and one 22 K-Hornet. At the end of the day, the only thing that makes the K version special or "better" for me is that none of my neighbors have one.... :D If you're just wanting to kill something, a K-Hornet being better exists only in one's mind or on an internet forum where velocity is always "king". :)

On the nostalgic side, and old rifle chambered in an old cartridge go together for me.

I just shoot the std Hornet in a 1-12. 99% 40 Vmax at 2900. I want to try some 50SX bullets for kicks. I shoot out to 200 yds with great success in low /no wind. I have a KHornet reamer to try, but never have yet. Case life is supposed to be better, but I "think" most of the case life issues are because many rifles have headspace issues. I have 300 piece lots of brass so, I don't know if I will ever have a brass issue, as I probably will never shoot it enough to hurt the brass. I have Remington, WW, Privi, Hornady and RWS brass, but am still on the Remington and it is lasting fine. When I was younger I wondered why anyone would want one, now I wonder why I waited so long to get one.

Never had any desire to go to a KHornet. I already had a 221FB. My four Hornets are all items of opportunity when I saw them and liked the rifles. Only the No.3 has the 1:16 twist, and it really does like light bullets. The others are 1:14 or 1:12 twist. Had both the Kimber M82 and a Cooper M38 and then ran into a used CZ527 to build a 17AH before the HH ever came out. I shot the CZ before building the 17AH, and discovered it shot 0.4 MOA with factory Win silver box 46gr ammo. That cinched the deal, to keep it as a 22 Hornet. Never built the 17AH.
