30 grain bullets in .17 Remington

Hey guys

I have a new X-Caliber barrel for my M700 Remington and it has the 1/9" twist. I have a hankering to try it next spring on some of our local rock chucks and would like to use a 30 grain bullet if I could but just wanted some feedback on those that have used a 30 grain (or heavier) .172" bullet in their rifles and how they worked. I feel sure that a 25 grain bullet would work just fine for this if I keep my distance sane but sometimes they are few hundred yards out and I think the additional thump from the 30 grain bullet would be good to have.

All replies, as always, appreciated.

Since I must use lead free in my rifles and hunting anything now in Commie California. I have switched over to the 15.5 NTX in all my 17 calibers.
However it is and has not been a issue as they shoot as well or better than most of the lead one's I used before.
Squeeks, rabbits, rock chucks all out to around 400 yrds are just as dead, even a few coyotes have fell to them. Mostly in the 17 Hornet, 17 fireball as of now. Bill K :)

Those 15.5gr NTX at about 5000fps from a 17 Rem would be pretty impressive.

I've used Kindler 29s & 30s in a 9 twist Fireball, no problem. Have killed some good sized game with them . IIRC, velocity was in the 3400-3500 range.

Russ,

I fireformed a lot of my .17 Predator brass on 'chucks, using 30 Golds. Being fireform loads, probably pretty close to .17 Rem. velocity.

Killed the crap out of them. Including more than just a couple at 400.

The only problem with running 30's for 'chucks in that 9 twist, is getting the 30's.

I bought 30s from Chan Nagel a few years ago. I don't know if he's still making them.

Yeah, would like to try a box of them if could find some at a reasonable price. Perhaps someone will chime in where I can find a few.

Just curious, but what do the 30's offer over the 25 Vmax or now discontinued 25 HP??

I'm guessing they have a higher BC but is their higher BC enough to out perform the faster 25 grainers?

I don't have a 17 Rem anymore, only have 17 Hornets, so it doesn't really matter to me, just curious is all.

I'm about ready to start fire forming .17-223 Improved with the 25gr Vmax then I will try the 30gr Black Hole bullets. I don't know who all else is making the 30s besides them but Reed' s and I think they are tough to get.

I would like to hear from someone who has used them.

You might contact BadgerBob on this forum. I think he offers a 17 caliber 30 grain bullet.

Good luck
